Halloween with all its tricks and treats is over and we are well into our Rotary Foundation month, which reminds us of needs that exist and the many good projects and services Rotary has in our communities and in the developing world. Christmas, Hanukah and the other festive and religious holidays are coming up quickly.  This is an excellent time for all of us to reflect on what is done and what needs further help to make the life of even one other person better off.   Rotary does this. Our actions and our work has a ripple effect!

Wheelchairs      The matching grant application has been completed and is currently being reviewed by our Jamaican partners. This distribution will likely happen in the Spring of 2013 and at this time it seems that wheelchairs will be given out both in Montego Bay and Kingston.A brand new wheelchair still costs $150. Consider giving one or more in the name of a family member or friend.

Computer Lab   This project at Lécole Vie de France in Jacmel Haiti is almost finished.  The other day the principal told me he was still waiting for internet hook-up.  A small group of Rotarians from here will go down in January on a fact-finding and awareness trip.   At that time there will be a community celebration or “inauguration”.

HHART 4   Steve Wallace is giving leadership to this hands-on humanitarian mission to the Dominican Republic where the participants will work with impoverished Haitians who live there in some very difficult situations. This Mission will happen in early April assuming there is enough interest and commitment.    The cost of the one week trip is $1300.

Cistern for the Demontreuil community in Jacmel, Haiti      Much of the TRF matching grant application has been completed and we are now looking for the last 30% (or $3030.) funding from our Clubs or individuals.   Six different D.7010 Clubs have already committed support.  Every $1. donated by a Club, will be matched by another $2.52. The Haitians want to build the cistern early in 2013.

Educational/Literacy Project in Jacmel, Haiti      This 2ndDistrict 7010 project in the Jacmel area will set up a library in L’école Vie de France, supply a 350 student school in the mountains with text books and set up a solar light near the mountain school as there is no electricity in the community.  To date this project has raised about 50% of what is needed. Once again all donations are welcome; every $ donated is matched by $2.21 as this project is slightly more costly than the cistern project.

Concentrating our efforts in one area of the world seems fitting.  Starting next July 1st every Rotary District will be part of the Future Vision Program. How this is going to affect us from 2013-14 on will be shared with clubs early in the new year.

Yours in Rotary,

Dawn Straka,

Chair District 7010 World Community Committee
