Children of Aids - Providing School Uniforms to Orphans

In 2015, Peter Edmunds of our club travelled to South Africa and joined the weekly food drop (70 kms) together with 4 local Rotarians. The project, run by a local farmer and her husband near the Kruger National Park, was providing weekly food to 1,680 children orphaned by the Aids epidemic, over an area some 70 kms long. Following the trip, our Club started a project and raised $15,000 to provide the children with school uniforms and sturdy shoes for walking to school through the bush. The uniforms were identified as a priority, to ensure the children were comfortable attending school. The Orphans were proud to show off their uniforms and shoes on the second trip a year later.
The project was led by Peter Edmunds, with help from many other fellow Rotarians. Peter and his team were able to raise over $15,000, which included generous donations from other Rotary clubs in our district. The money was used to purchase 330+ school uniforms and shoes for the children.
The top picture shows the truck nearing the end of the 6 stop 70 km weekly run through the bush, and the food and location and some orphans with Den mothers collecting food.
Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru (CASP) – Ann Sullivan Center of Peru

The Centro Ann Sullivan del Peru (CASP) is a non-profit, non-governmental educational organization created to serve people with different abilities (such as autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and developmental delays) and their families. Since its founding in 1979, CASP has provided a comprehensive educational system which includes programs that span the life of their students and has grown to become an international model center of inclusion, education, training, and research. Today, 100+ students are working in real jobs (many of them are the sole support for their families), 15,000+ families have been trained by CASP, and 7+ countries have centers influenced by the CASP model.
CASP Long Distance Education Program

In the early 1990s, Don Fraser (Past District Governor of the Rotary Club of Sudbury) spearheaded Phase I of CASP’s Long Distance Education Program. After Don’s passing and in his memory, the Rotary Club of Sudbury, led by Past District Governor Richard Levert (with generous contributions in hand from other Rotary clubs), in partnership with the Rotary Club of Callao in Peru, began work on Phase II in 2003 and Phase III in 2008.
With the help of our clubs and Rotary Foundation funding, we were able to facilitate the purchase and implementation of a monitoring system at CASP. 19 camera domes with audio systems and accessories were purchased and installed. This enabled CASP to improve the quality of the education services in their classrooms, and to produce educational videos to be used to train families and professionals in local and remote areas of Peru and internationally. CASP honoured Don Fraser’s memory, as a friend and long-time supporter, by naming their training room after him.
