A Bed of My OwnMembers of the Carmel Rotary, along with Eileen Kelly, gathered at Restoration Furniture in Carmel last Thursday. The Rotary Club's motto of "Service Above Self" is once again being felt throughout Putnam County, thanks to the members of the Carmel Rotary Club. Last year, the Club raised funds for the national organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace during the Carmel Rotary's Basketball Challenge. Sleep in Heavenly Peace believes that a bed is a basic need for the proper physical, emotional, and mental support that a child needs. Inspired by Sleep in Heavenly Peace's mission to provide beds for children in need, Carmel Rotarians decided to undertake a similar project focusing on Putnam County families. Rotarian Kevin Carroll, who is coordinating the Putnam project, explained, "All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. In affluent Putnam County, boys and girls are going to sleep without a bed - or even a pillow to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. This can affect their happiness and health.”

17th Annual Basketball Challenge AnnouncedThis popular community fundraising event will be held on Saturday, March 2nd from 9am-12pm, at the Carmel High School Gym, 30 Fair St., Carmel. Supported by the Carmel High School Interact Club and the Carmel High School Mentor Club, this event offers non-profit organizations and community project groups an opportunity to raise funds to support their programs and services. Organizations, clubs, adults and youth, and businesses are invited to sign-up and raise money for their favorite non-profit organization. It’s fun and easy. You don’t have to be a basketball player or know how to play the game to participate. Here’s how it works - participants ask for pledges per basket and/or flat donations from as many supporters (clientele, friends and neighbors) as they can. Then at the event, participants will attempt to complete as many baskets as possible during a two-minute period. Each successful basket will be tallied against per basket pledges and added to flat donations to equal the amount due from each of the participants’ supporters. Trophies will be awarded in the youth division and prizes in the adult division to the persons successfully completing the most baskets in the various age groups. Businesses and community members are also invited to become event sponsors |

Carmel Rotary Club Food Drive Marks Fifth AnniversaryCarmel NY On December 14, 2013, the Rotary Club of Carmel NY will enter into it's sixth year of collecting and distributing food donations to the areas four major food pantries. The donations, which are collected at the Shop Rite Supermarket in Carmel three times peer week, are delivered by Carmel Rotarians to St. John the Evangelist food pantry in Mahopac, Gilead Presbyterian Church food pantry in Carmel, The Brewster Community Food Pantry and Putnam CAP both in Brewster. During the past five years the total value of donated food is estimated at approximately $250,000. Twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall the Carmel Rotary holds its “Fill the Truck” weekend where 150 to 200 boxes with a total value of approximately $5,000 of additional donations are collected and distributed. “This all started as a Holiday project on December 14, 2008”, said Carmel Rotarian and Food Drive Chairman George Knoechel. “What we found out was that the need in our community is so great, we must continue to support our food pantries until they tell us they don't need us any more,” said Knoechel. "The public has been very supportive and generous, we usually find the collection boxes at Shop Rite overflowing with donations,” said Sal Gambino a Carmel Rotarian who helps deliver food to the pantries on a regular basis. Currently over 950 Putnam County families are served by our community food pantries and are helped by the efforts of the Carmel Rotary. |

Wellness Bytes – May you be happy, May you be well, May you be connected… |
Wellness Bytes – May you be happy, May you be well, May you be connected…This weekend, my brother- and sister-in-law came to visit with their 3 adult children. We have not really had time in the past to connect for more than an evening out or for a family party. Unlike our previous times together, we spent four days having meaningful conversations, laughing, and sharing outdoor and indoor fun. I came to know and to appreciate our family in a deeper way, and after they left, instead of feeling depleted and stressed, I felt energized, loved, and connected with them in a new way. Family can be a wonderful social support and connection if the relationships are positive and healthy. However, some of us lack healthy family interaction and will develop these ties with other social groups. Others have a combination of family, social groups and individual relationships that are supportive and provide a sense of interconnection. The need for social connection has deep cultural roots, as we consider that early humans bonded together in groups or tribes for survival. In contrast to basic survival, several studies over the past 40 years that have suggested that social relationships may greatly enhance health and wellness by helping us to feel more positive and less depressed, and by contributing to our sense of belonging and security. A lack of social contact is a risk for cardiovascular disease and earlier death. In fact social isolation is a major risk factor for depression, and some studies have highlighted brain changes in miceas a result of social deprivation. Now, in describing social isolation, I am not talking about people who prefer alone time to going to parties. Rather, it seems that most of us need a couple of people we can talk to about personal issues and the things that are important to us, along with sharing life experiences together. In addition, when we connect with others by helping them or doing acts of kindness and compassion, serotonin, one of our “happy chemical messengers”, actually rises, and we feel better. What about you? How do you connect with other people? Do you have people you can confide in? Do you feel supported and satisfied by your relationships? Do you contribute to relationships and foster closeness? Do you limit relationships that are draining, conflicted or downright harmful? What are some ways to foster healthy connections? Here are a few examples, and I invite you to brainstorm your own:
Keep in mind that our social ties not only foster our own health and wellness, but also help others. We can make small changes in our social lives that have large impacts. What would it mean to reach out to someone who is feeling lonely or having difficulty driving to be with others? What would it mean for you? What is one small step you could take tomorrow that would promote connection? Wishing you a week filled with meaningful interaction! Lisa

Here is what he had to say: "[Connie] has not only represented the Carmel Rotary Club well, but has been a wonderful example of “Service above Self”. [She] has been involved in almost every club project and event this year and did it with a great attitude and what I call, a happy heart….. Her efforts garnered four district awards for our club this year at the district assembly: New Generations award, Zone leadership award, Public image award and the Literacy award. She instituted/implemented new initiatives such as the career day, reading program at the Kent school, protocols manual and the refacing of our meeting place. This wonderful person joined Rotary at the invitation of Andy Senno, the same year I joined. I also understand that she was a bit anxious about membership as she confesses to suffer from a great fear of public speaking and presentations…Well, I think she got over that fear…. Words to describe her would be …. Respectful, Kind, Caring, Good Listener, Always Smiling, Hard Worker, Good Leader I am happy and honored to announce that this year’s “Rotarian of the Year”, goes to our very own club President: Connie Fagan." |

BASKETBALL SHOOTOUT SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 13THThe Carmel Rotary Club will once again sponsor its Community Basketball Shootout. Since 2008 this annual Rotary Club event has enabled area service and youth organizations to raise over $27,000 in much-needed funds to support important programs in the community. CARMEL ROTARY CLUB AND OUR DEDICATED ROTARIANSFRIDAY OCT. 17TH, 2014Dear Rotarians;
Last evening, Maryellen and myself had the pleasure of attending the 5th annual Salvation Army Gala held at Colonial Terrace, Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. with our President Kathy and Jim, Al L. and Dimmy, Amy & Joe Covais, Margie & Dave Keith, Tony Mac. and Sal Gambino.
There were many Rotarians from Carmel, Brewster, Mahopac, and Westchester County.
Our own Rotarian Jim Reitz was honored for his dedication to the principles of Rotary, "SERVICE ABOVE SELF." The weather was perfect, the accommodations were delightful and the food & service were very good.
Jim was presented with service awards from the Salvation Army, City of Peekskill, the Albany Legislature and our own former Rotarian, Putnam County Executive, Maryellen Odell. Peekskill Mayor, Frank Catalina, Esq delivered the above awards to Jim and told the audience of their longstanding legal relationship, Jim's exemplary reputation in the legal community and his tireless dedication to the betterment of our local community including Jim being a member of Mahopac Falls volunteer department.
In the past five years three members of our club have been recognized by the Salvation Army and Jim now becomes a prestigious member of that crew along with Sal Gambino and George Knoechel. A Carmel Rotarian being honored in 3 out of the 5 times the Salvation Army has presented these awards is quite an achievement.
Today our brother Rotarian Don Smith received the BRONZE KEY AWARD from the National Council on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies. The Bronze Key Award is a national recognition award granted to an individual that has made an outstanding contribution to the field of substance abuse prevention. Due to previous medical commitments Maryellen and myself were unable to attend the ceremony and we would like to congratulate Don for his achievements.
So, congratulations to our Carmel Rotary Club and our dedicated Rotarians.

Everyday Toxins to Avoid
(CNN) -- A growing body of research is linking five chemicals -- among the
most common in the world -- to a host of ailments, including cancer, sexual
problems and behavioral issues.
We encounter them every day -- in plastic bottles, storage containers, food wrap, cans, cookware, appliances, carpets, shower curtains, clothes, personal care products, furniture, television sets, electronics, bedding, cushions and mattresses. In short, every room in almost every house in the United States is likely to contain at least one of these chemicals, many of which did not exist a century ago. They are bisphenol A, or BPA; phthalates; PFOA; formaldehyde; and polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or PDBEs. Tests reveal most of us now carry them in our bodies, but are they putting our health -- and the health of our children -- in jeopardy? Here's what you should know about: |

It Starts With a Vision: Carmel Rotary's Commitment to Relieve Hunger
Have you ever wondered how big projects get started? What began as a holiday seasonal activity to help raise funds for our local community, has become a year-long commitment to the collection and delivery of food to local Putnam County food pantries. On December 14, 2008, Rotarian George Knoechel, began a program that has made a difference in the food supply for Putnam County. In ten months, $37,000 worth of food has been collected and delivered to four food pantries: Putnam Community Action Program (CAP), Gilead Presbyterian Church, Brewster Community Food Pantry, and St. John the Evangelist Church.

Hello, everybody!
When I decided to do this Exchange Program, I was completely unsure about the outcome. A lot of people told me it was an excellent decision, life-changing. On the other hand, some said that it would be a hard time, being away from my family, friends, country. Anyway, what I knew for sure is that it would be an adventure. |
First Annual Chili Cookoff
Some four or so years ago Putnam Hospital Center approached the service organizations in the county seeking pledges for the Hospital building Fund. Until that time the Carmel Rotary Club annually supported the Hospital providing volunteers to run the ticket booth for the rides at the Hospital Fair also running the games concession. After discussion and consideration, the Club's Board of Directors decided that rather than pledge a set sum of money, we would hold an annual fundraiser and dedicate the proceeds to the Hospital.
