Agenda:
  • Donnie Dragish announced that Renee English will serve as the new Interact Advisor
  • Donnie Dragish also shared with the club the board’s decision to discontinue involvement with the water tent at the Canfield Fair. The consensus is that the amount earned, $3,751 to be divided among 6 clubs, did not warrant the amount of work and number of hours put in by club members.
  • Mike Raulin encouraged club members who may have or know of a high school junior to consider having that student participate in RYLA, Rotary Youth Leadership Award, which is a weekend event held every third week in February at the Avalon Inn in Warren.  Each year 2 high school students are sponsored by Canfield Rotary to take part in leadership and character building activities that are designed to encourage even reluctant participants to step into leadership roles and realize untapped potential.  Registration takes place in November.
  • Eric Axleson reported on the progress of the renovations at the Veteran’s Memorial Museum. The new siding is a result of a generous donation by Sam Boak, who has also arranged for electrical work to be completed on the interior of the building. Other improvements, including renovations to the library within, were made possible in large part due to a $7,600 grant secured by Canfield Rotary.
  • Tom Walker updated the club regarding flag pick-up, encouraging members to complete their routes before rain sets in later this week and reminding them to check for wear or damage.
  • Donna Buzulencia introduced today’s speaker, Youngstown Rotarian and author Tom Welsh, who spoke to the club regarding his new book, Classic Restaurants of Youngstown. Mr. Welsh led members on a nostalgic trip down memory lane as he described the evolution of the dining experience in Youngstown. Mention of such places as The Mural Room, Golden Dawn, The Italian Restaurant, Cicero’s, The Mansion, and many others brought smiles to the faces of most in attendance. According to Mr. Welsh, “Tastes jog our memory like nothing else!”
