This is our regular standing bi-monthly stuffing the bags volunteer activity at Bags of Fun headquarters in Centennial. We currently meet from 11am-Noon. Hopefully in the near future we will deliver the bags directly to kiddos in the Children's Hospitals.
The Gabby Krause Foundation is a network of caring people who want to make a difference in the lives of children with cancer and other long-term childhood illnesses. Their signature project is Bags of Fun®, which was established in October 2004 in honor of an amazing 6-year-old, Gabby, who also had a terminal disease. Their mission is to bring joy, laughter, and relief to every child fighting a life-threatening disease or condition.
What began as a mother’s wish to offer a playful respite for her daughter fighting brain cancer has now become a movement to reclaim the innocence and playfulness of childhood for those who are defenseless by the realities of their medical condition. When a child is diagnosed with a life threatening or debilitating condition, their chance to be a kid - to play, to laugh and to be silly - is suddenly taken away from them. The focus becomes finding the right doctors, deciding on treatment plans, and facing the fears that no parent or child ever dreams of facing. Bags of Fun give these children an escape from the scary, adult world. The objective of this program is to harness the power of play as a means to increase happiness and speed recovery when a child needs it most. Every minute a child spends enjoying toys from their Bag of Fun is another minute spent as a distraction from the illness, pain and anxiety that they experience every day. By giving children and their families a Bag of Fun, the Gabby Krause Foundation is living up to a dream set by a young girl, a girl who knew firsthand the impact a simple toy, game or puzzle could provide during the fight of her life. |

Aug. 31, 2023 7:15 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
Good Afternoon, We have our Service Project Meeting coming up - Thursday, August 31st! Hopefully you have seen this announced in many forms over the past few weeks. Our club is going to provide member volunteer opportunities in lieu of a Thursday morning meeting as we move into this new Rotary Year. Our first project will be on Thursday, August 31st and will be associated with the maintenance of a portion of the HIgh LIne Canal in the area of Bible Park. The details are as follows: Date: August 31, 2023 Location: Bible Park, 6802 E. Yale Ave, Denver, CO. Parking lot - north entrance to the park off Yale. My car, a black Toyota HIghlander, will be parked with a table and our Rotary Flag. Start/End Time: Start at 7:15 a.m. with fellowship and breakfast - coffee, Duffy Rolls, and breakfast burritos. Project begins at 7:30 a.m. with distribution of trash pickup supplies (trash bags, pick up tools and gloves) and safety reminders. Project ends at 9:30 a.m. What to bring/wear: Wear your Rotary Gear - how about that Rotary Woohoo Bike Jersey? Bring water bottles (there will be bottled water available), sunscreen, hats, insect repellant, work gloves (if you have your own, you might want to bring). If you plan on working on trash pickup in the dry canal (Group 1), you may want to wear long pants, appropriate shoes and a long sleeve shirt. See project details below. Project Options/Details: Group 1 - Canal Cleanup This project entails trash pick up in the dry canal bed. This part of the canal is free of shrubery and weeds and should be dry unless it has recently rained. This project is moderately strenuous as you must go down the canal bank to get to the trash and then back up - please no bad knees for this one! This is the most physical of all the projects but is also the one where most of the trash is located in the actual canal. Group 2 - Bike/Walking Trail Cleanup This project entails trash pick up along the side of the bike/walking trail that runs along side of the canal from Iliff to Quebec. This is a level walking surface. Those participants who choose this project will need to drive about 1/2 mile to the location where we will start this clean up. We can carpool, will have maps and a club member to lead the way. Group 3 - Bible Park Cleanup This project will involve sweeping the large park for trash. Bible Park is a large and relatively clean park so there may not be much trash to pick up. This may be more of a nice walk on a beautiful morning, enjoying the park and your fellow rotarians. However, this is a very important project that "put eyes on the park" and makes sure the park stays clean! Group 4 - Count Users (bike riders and walkers) and Do an Inventory of Trees These projects are both important and are key statistics that are necessary to maintain funding for this valuable resource. The Conservancy will send the details of this project later. Volunteer Registration and Waivers: Time: August 19 thru August 28th You will get a volunteer registration form shortly. It gives the ability to sign up for any of these projects listed above. Once you register, I will send you a link to complete a volunteer waiver form. This MUST be completed and submitted to the HIgh Line Conservancy BEFORE we begin our project. If you have a friend or family member that would like to volunteer with us, please invite them and register them. Again, please register them with all the pertinent information as I will send them the waiver link. Note - if you have trouble with the link, please contact me and I will help you with this. I will also bring manual forms to the meeting on August 24th if you would like to complete and give back to me. Registration is also important for our breakfast count. That should get your attention, RIGHT!!!! We want to make sure we have enough for all our participants I apologize for the lengthy email, but this service project is full of details! This is an exciting opportunity for our Rotary Club to become "visible stewards" of this fabulous community resource. This is WHAT WE DO! Please let me know if you have any questions. I can also address these and any additional details that I may have overlooked in our August 24th meeting. Yours In Service, Cheryl
