Our weekly meeting was highlighted by a significant presentation and an interesting and thought-provoking guest speaker. Past District Governor (PDG) Dawn Straka made a presentation of the Rotary Foundation Bequest Society Pin to President Atul and his wife Charlotte who have made a bequest to Rotary International Foundation (pictured) She was ably assisted by another P.D.G. Willis Cleveland. Our guest speaker today was Scott Haldane, the C.E.O. of the Y.M.C.A. in Canada. Scott was not at our meeting to speak about the YMCA but rather about his recent appointment to the National Panel of the First Nations Education. The Panel’s mandate was to develop options which might include legislation to improve elementary and secondary school education on First Nation reserves. The Committee recommended developing a First Nations Education System for Canada which would involve: Co-create a child centred First Nations Act; Co-create a National Committee for First Nations Education; Facilitate and support creation of a First Nations Education system through Regional and National organizations; Ensure adequate funding; Establish accountability and reporting networks.
