Cranes (the Migratory Bird Type of Crane) as a Way to Help Dialogue on the Korean Peninsula

Cranes are large migratory birds, iconic in many countries around the world that have been around from the time of the dinosaurs.

Since 1973, the International Crane Foundation (ICF) has been protecting the 15 crane species and their habitats on 5 continents. ICF works in 45 countries, including Russia, China, and until recently North Korea (Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea-DPRK). Everywhere ICF works the organization looks first at what the local people need. From 2008 to 2015 ICF conducted a project to assist people living near cranes to improve their agriculture, so that they have more to eat. The people then helped protect the cranes. ICF Co-founder, Dr. George Archibald and Past Board Chair, Hall Healy, traveled to North Korea to assist in implementing and monitoring of the project.

On November 30th, Hall Healy will discuss the North Korean work-how this kind of activity can help enhance dialogue between countries, and what it’s like to work in that elusive place, as well as about his recent trip to South Korea.
