The Rotary Club of Chicago -O'Hare
meets weekly at 12:00 noon
The Great Escape in Schiller Park IL
*****On Thursday, February 1, 2018, the Rotary Club of Chicago O'Hare will welcome Dr. Nick Kuennen speaking about "Get Fit & Active: Cheap & Easy.” Don't have a lot of time or money? No problem -- learn how to burn calories, save money & feel great!! The Foundation Board of Directors will meet at 11:00 AM on Thursday morning at The Great Escape. We look forward to seeing you for lunch!!
*****A special “thank you” goes to the packing and delivery crew for the donation of furniture and household items by PDG Ron Broida to the Mercy Housing Lakefront Grand Family Apartments, Senior Living Apartments and the Lawndale Lofts Apartments. Jack Ranttila, Chuck Henschel, Tim Ranttila (Pat & Jack's son), John Kearns, Dave Woodcock, and Pat Ranttila worked Sunday (packing) and Monday (unpacking) to complete the job. They had a full Penske truck and were able to help the residents of four apartments have some basic living comforts – two apartments had no beds! Many household items (towels, pans, glasses) were packed and delivered to our “Welcome Basket” Closet at Mercy Housing South Loop this week. These are Rotarians “making a difference!”
*****It's time to begin our favorite job in Rotary!! Each year our Club extends college scholarships to seven worthy students at East and West Leyden and the O'Hare family. Our main fundraiser The Jack Frawley Memorial Rotary Golf Outing in June (more info below) is to amass the funds to continue this amazing support for students. Criteria for receiving a scholarship are strong grades & SAT scores, service to community & school through activities and clubs, family need, and future goals and plans. We thank Chuck Henschel, Chair of Scholarship Committee, for organizing the entire process along with his team: John Kearns, Jack Ranttila, Sylvia Jewgieniew, and Mike Sullivan!!
*****Our Club's 3rd Annual HoopsMania Fundraiser from 1/18/18–3/8/18 The goal has been set for each member to sell at least 10 tickets at $20 each for which you will get your allotment this Thursday. When selling, make sure that the buyer completes on the stub portion of the ticket and return it to Cruz with the money. She will be at our weekly meetings to collect the stubs and money as tickets are being sold. She will have extras in case anyone wants to sell more -- let her know by Tuesday how many you want and she'll get them to you at the following Thursday's meeting. Every ticket sold means more $$$ for “doing good for the world!!” Cruz: cruz@bernal-albano.com The following information describes how each ticket holder can win:
Each game card is randomly assigned 8 teams (2 from each region) that will play in college
basketball’s national championship tournament. The teams are represented by their seed numbers
and regions in the tournament. To play the game, participants simply add up all the points scored by
their 8 teams throughout the tourney. The top 45 and bottom 4 scoring game cards all win prizes!
*****You are invited to attend an evening you will not soon forget!! The Leyden Inspirational Eagle Award Dinner and Ceremony sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chicago O'Hare will be held at East Leyden High School on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 6:00 PM in the Nardini Library. We thank Frank Holthouse who has been working this year to make this an evening to remember for not only the students and parents, but also for our club.

The test of our progress is not whether
we add more to the abundance of those who have much,
it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.

“When wealth is passed off as merit, bad luck is seen as bad character. This is how ideologues justify punishing the sick and the poor. But poverty is neither a crime nor a character flaw. Stigmatize whose who let people die, not those who struggle to live.”
