The Rotary Club of Chicago -O'Hare
meets weekly at 12:00 noon
The Great Escape in Schiller Park IL
*****On Thursday, October 12, 2017, the Rotary Club of Chicago O'Hare will welcome Shawn Jeffers, Executive Director of the Little City Foundation. Their mission is to provide children and adults with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities the best options and opportunities to live safely, work productively, explore creatively and learn continuously throughout their lifetime. We encourage you to attend this Little City presentation! Join us for lunch at 12:00 noon at The Great Escape.
*****Congratulations to us!! Mercy Housing Lakefront awarded our Club “Volunteers of the Year” for our continuous support of their residents. Our work has included:
----- “Welcome Home Baskets” for each new resident in supportive facilities including purchasing, stocking & packing each bag since 2008
----- Volunteering at the Austin After-School program
----- Supporting the grandmothers in the Grand Family Apartments in Roseland with gift cards and arranged My Joyful Heart gifts for the children since 2012
----- Supported new, previously homeless residents in the Grand Family Apartments with furniture, household items and food
----- Supplying every MHL resident with a blanket and amenity kit from our Airline Surplus in the past.
----- Represented Rotary on MHL Boards
Thank you to all members that have participated in this amazing support!
And all at once, summer collapsed into fall. Oscar Wilde
*****It is not too early to think about the Holiday Season 2017 for three of our charities.
****My Joyful Heart is in need of more support with coat giving to their 800+ children. We would like to challenge each member to purchase one (or more!) coat for one kid!! Ed Jacob has agreed to organize this drive – similar to our School Supply Drive – where we have a cheaper, in-bulk source of coats. Please check your email for details – $20 per coat!!
****Mercy Housing Lakefront Grand Family Apartments continue to need our support. My Joyful Heart will continue to make gifts for the children, but we would like to continue to give a gift to each of ten grandmothers with several gift cards to help stretch their meager budgets for the holidays. These need to be in the denomination of $25 from Target, Walmart or Walgreens. Larry Fritz, our beloved Scrip (Manna) Chair, will order for us with a financial benefit coming back to the Club. 1fritzlaw@att.net
****In mid-November the Hines VA Hospital Veteran Stand Down will be held at Humboldt Park Armory. Each year our Club has gathered men's winter coats for these homeless vets. The sizes should be from Large – XXXL. No leather or ladies coats will be accepted. Check out your closets or any resale shops in your neighborhood. Any questions? John Kearns jwkearns@hotmail.com
*****We will be supporting the “Make a Difference Day” for the Leyden Schools on Saturday, October 21st from 8:00 – 12:00 at Leyden. Our donations to Leyden are the materials from the Airline Surplus Project from which Interact students will pack into 1000 Amenity Kits for the homeless veterans to pick up at the Hines VA HospitalVeteran StandDown in Humboldt Park in November. If you are available on Saturday, October 21st, Frank Holthouse has asked for help. Let him know if you will be available. f.holthouse@leyden212.org

*****Join the 5th Annual Live Streamed World Polio Day Event on October 24, 2017, at 4:30 CST cohosted by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to share progress on the road to polio eradication. Register through our Rotary District 6450 or Rotary International websites. Poliomyelitis (polio) is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio is incurable, but completely vaccine-preventable.
In 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed more than $1.7 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $7.2 billion to the effort.
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world. Rotary’s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building.
Today, there are only three countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Just 37 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2016, which is a reduction of more than 99.9 percent since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day.
