Update on new Co. Lab Program - Leyden
Feb. 07, 2019
This week we will have the pleasure of having Leyden teachers Amy Gorzynski and Chris Lange along with six students as our lunch guest. They will tell us about the District’s experiential, hands-on learning process called “Co.Lab”
Co.Lab is an abbreviation of “Collaborative” meaning cooperate, communicate, construct, etc. The name “Lab” is for hands-on, experiential learning. Students become confident, creative problem-solvers in an interdisciplinary and collaborative space that fosters inquiry, leadership, communication, and reflection to help students discover their passions and advocate for their learning.

Weiss Scholarship Foundation
Apr. 25, 2019
As a member of The Rotary Club of Naperville, I know Rotarians all over the world respect and honor the phrase, “Service Above Self”. In my work in Kenya I have many times been touring a facility and run across the Rotary logo representing a great Rotary project that helped the community. The Weiss Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships to very poor Kenyan Children. Since 2012 we have awarded 54 full four year high school scholarships in a village where few had ever gone to high school. Five of our students are now in University and we just made our first placement of a student in a vocational school with many more to come. I have been to Kenya six times myself. We are providing real HOPE in a community that really had no hope before our foundation.
Asante Sana! Brett Weiss - Founder and Director Warren "Bunny" Weiss Weiss Scholarship Foundation Board Member Email: brett@weissscholarshipfoundation.org Mobile: 1-630-248-5405

Mental Math
May 23, 2019
Cliff Petrak
Cliff Petrak of Chicago holds a B.S. degree in mathematics from DePaul University and an M.S. in mathematics from Chicago State University. Now retired, Cliff enjoyed a 40-year math teaching and coaching career at his alma mater, Brother Rice H.S. in Chicago. For his academic and coaching accomplishments in math, baseball, bowling and hockey during that time span, he has been recognized by his induction into six different halls of fame. Cliff has been giving presentations and workshops in speed and mental math since 1996 at schools, libraries and math conferences in 16 states and Canada, now totaling 137 such presentations. He has presented at 2 NCTM national conferences and 5 NCTM regional conferences. He is author of 3 books including Don’t Slow Me Down with that Calculator , 2005, in which he details 62 little-known, super-shortcut computational techniques and strategies. He will demonstrate how these speed math methods will always prove faster than the old fashioned algorithmic methods with which we grew up. He’ll also show how these methods are also often faster than with the use of a calculator! The directives of 3 of the Common Core Standards will play an important part in the discovery of these techniques. Many of these methods have long been in use in European and Asian schools and their textbooks, which explain why we currently find ourselves near the bottom as the 34th ranking country in the world in mental math and calculation abilities. Once learned, however, these methods will help bring our calculating methods into the 21st Century and, at the same time, will leave your calculator-dependent friends in the dust!
