Today we welcomed again prospective member Francis Yarborough, and a guest of Martin Russell and prospective member Ray McGill. Also visiting rotarian from the Bolton club Ron Kyle
Sue Croft has packets of tickets and wants each rotarian to buy or sell as many as possible. Contact yours friends, neighbors, freiend's neighbors, neighbor's friends, anyone else you can think of so we can sell as many tickets as possible to make GNO a big success. If you run out of tickets she will get more for you but if you cannot sell all you have been given, make sure they go back to Sue for re-distribution.
Nancy announced that Rusty Russell is officially retiring and Doug Christie has arranged a party for him Nov 2nd at Hawke Ridge Golf Club. 2to 4 PM. Please RSVP to the law office.
Tom is putting together a team of Gentlemen to drive ladies who after GNO need a ride. This allows them to enjoy the evening without worrying how to get home safe.
We will need 10 volunteers who will make 1 or possibly 2 trips from Fern to wherever between 9 and 11 pm . We have 5 drivers so far and need 5 more.
Greg is back on duty and decided that we required quizzing to see how many of us were up to date on Rotary current events. Some of the questions were tricky and entire tables of rotarians were stumped until finally Angela and then Marilyn got the right answers and earned immunity for their table. Apart from Tom being fined for recommending his drivers make sure the back seats of their cars were clean
and tidy when they show up for GNO . That was it except he probably got Carl Dixon and Lawrence Shaw for 50/50
Our Speaker today was Eileen Shewan who introduced us to a new concept of helping young victims of substance abuse which causes addiction and mental disorder. She pointed out that these young teens may be helped by medical attention and counseling but then are expected to return to the same high school environment which encourages through peer pressure that they fall back into the same cycle of substance abuse. The problem of substance abuse is much more common than anyone would expect. She quoted this problem to be experienced by 13% of all high school students and as many as 3500 in Simcoe County alone. Canada has the 2nd highest number of cases of substance abuse in the world.
Eileen has helped establish a program of Recovery Based Education which provides separate school with a safe drug free environment for these students to attend and graduate from. There is a new school being opened close to Midland and there will need to be more to serve the needs of Simcoe. This type of protected education has proven to be very successful in the U.S. and will work here as well.
