Sarge and Happy Bucks

Kevin Offered Immunity for $10 - Only paid for by Randy. Fines to late comers, and Ralph for alleged "theft of mug" as well as to everyone who had recently "shaved".

NOTE There is nowhere on the sheet that asks to record Happy Bucks, due to that and given this is my first attempt at Bulletin Editor I overlooked recording the same. Kevin I'll bring a dollar next week - let's see how many read this!
That said, there were in fact a good number of happy bucks collected yesterday.

The Speaker this Week was Past President Tony Telford speaking on International Rotary Convention in Soeul South Korea.

Tony spoke about how great an impact the Convention had on him and strongly encouraged everyone to try to attend one if they could. Everyone was friendly and had a story and wanted to know yours. He was amazed at the grandeur of it. The registration hall alone was 249,000 sq ft where 45,000 Rotarians went to register from all around the world - 45 of them being from our own District. Following Registration came a tour of the "House of Friendship".

The speakers were amazing and the Convention spared no expense. They included The Secretary of the United Nations, The President of National Geographic, and the President of Sri-Lanka who had an especially moving story about Rotary in his Country and their dedication to inoculating EVERYONE with the Polio Vaccine despite the Civil war.

Tony was also introduced to the New below Zero Shelter Boxes that have insulation and stoves and are good for up to -30C.

He spoke at length and in detail about his own unique experience at the end of his trip as helped and sat with someone in desperate need of a blood transfusion and couldn't say enough about the quality of people working at the place he stayed.

He also shared much of what he had learned about South Korea itself. South Korea is "one of the most forward countries in the Pacific Rim". Soeul itself as around 9 Million people. The imagery and marks of ongoing conflict with the North was commonplace. Seeing the barricades at the boarder was an especially surreal experience. Tony noted that the actual Korean war of the 50s had the largest allied support of any War in modern History. South Korea was a very clean Country, almost surprisingly so, but it wasn't always that way, it was cleaned up in such a vast measure in conjunction with the Seoul Olympic games in 1980's that it changed the whole culture of the Country.

A great presentation.

Swimming Pool Fund:

1981 – Following a fire that gutted the Peter Street YMCA, losing the only indoor swimming facility, Henry Thor, aged 60 (club member), kicked off a campaign to raise funds for a new pool by participating in the “cross lake swim”. Club matched Henry’s efforts for a grand total of little over $3,000.

Rotary Club of Orillia, started the cross lake swim 1962, becoming an annual event from Fern Resort to town dock, some 2 ½ miles. Due to high cost of liability insurance, the annual event terminated 1993.
