Trivia
World Understanding and Peace Day - recognizes Rotary's birthday, February 23, 1905 - 111 years young.  Rotary started with one man's dream, Paul P. Harris, born in Racine, Wisconsin and raised by his paternal grandparents in Wallingford, Vermont.  Following graduation, he found life very lonely while trying to establish his law firm in the large city of Chicago.  He approached three other business associates whom he know, also from small towns, and presented his idea of forming a group of business people from different walks of life (this was the origin of our present classification system) to meet regularly at a members place of business, meeting from week to week rotating from one location to another.  Hence Rotary was born.
From our humble beginnings of our four members, the Rotary Club of Chicago, February 23, 1905 has become ...
  • 1910 The Association of Rotary Clubs
  • 1912 The National Association of Rotary Clubs
  • 1922 Rotary International
111 years later...
  • 1.2 Million Members
  • 33,000 Clubs
  • 200 Countries
  • 7 Official languages
Program
We had the pleasure of  introducing and inducting Andrew Shuttleworth to membership in our club.
Andrew graduated form York University with a Bachelor of Economics.  Andrew has 4 children ranging from 10 months to 15 years old.  He is married to former NBA cheerleader, writer, and actress of stage and screen, Janelle Bartosek.
Andrew is the President of the Orillia Toastmasters Club, and the incoming  President of the Orillia Winter Carnival.  He serves on the Terry Fox Run organizing committee, and works closely with Habitat for Humanity, both with fundraising and the construction of the 2016 building.
Andrew is the winner of the Investors Group 2014 Barrie Huronia Community Service Award.  He is an entrepreneur building his own financial services practice, a platinum level Personal Financial Planner, and is currently in school for his CFP designation.
Andrew loves the City of Orillia and the great people that live here and make up this community.
Andrew learned about Rotary through the GNO.  Cliff had the pleasure of escorting his wife home and learned all about Rotary along the way.

Program
Our program was to learn about Medical Ministry International (MMI).  MMI has been around since 1968 working diligently to meet the need for medical care among the world's poor with lasting solutions through excellence in medicine, patient care, and integrated health education.  The fulfill these efforts by mobilizing volunteers into nearly forthy countries on medical mission projects and, over time, establish effective permanent medical centers in many of those areas.
Each year, over 1500 people - doctors, dentists, nurses, surgeons, other health care professionals, and people with no medical training at all, donate their time to serve on MMI projects.  There are roles for families and non-medical people to play, just as there are for medical people.  More than 70% of MMI volunteers return to serve on other projects.
Integrated health is the key as they meet not only medical, dental, and surgical health needs, but also counsel with patients, coach them through disease prevention, promote health maintenance, and care for the spiritual needs as well.
MMI conducts approximately 80-90 missions per year all over the world.  MMI Canada is headquartered in Stoney Creek, Ontario.
