ROTARY 101

The Impact of Rotary - 47 Million Volunteer Hours and Counting!
Rotary is proud to be the first global membership organization to conduct an empirical analysis of its volunteers' impact using Johns Hopkins University's systematic methodology. This is just the beginning of using the most innovative tools of measurement to capture and enhance our impact. As we better understand the vast contributions of volunteer work, we can mobilize this remarkable but often undervalued resource to better the world and allow it to thrive in the years to come.
According to the new study, released by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies, with just 563 paid employees globally, Rotary International annually mobilizes volunteer effort equivalent to nearly 27000 full-time paid workers. What is more, this study reveals that the efforts of Rotary volunteers save communities an estimated $850 million USD in service cost per year.

West Africa, the Lake Chad area, Cote d'Ivoire, Togo, Philippines, Malaysia and Afghanistan. Nigeria is now 3 yrs polio free! Rotary is still committed to raising $50 million a year over the next three years and each dollar will be matched with an additional two dollars by the Gates Foundation.

    Guest Speaker & Committee Updates:

Jed Levene - Ontario Winter Games

February 27 - March 1, Orillia will be hosting the Ontario Winter Games. 27 sports, 4 days, 3500 participants and approximately 5.5 thousand guests!

In 2018, Orillia hosted the games and they went as far as Collingwood and Huntsville to accommodate all of them. This year, all games will be within 30 minutes of Orillia. The projected economic impact is 5.1 million with an estimated 4 million staying within the area.
The Ministry provides the framework for the games and the Provincial Sporting Organization is responsible for getting the participants but these games require a lot of volunteers! There is 1200 volunteer spots and currently there are over 800 registered volunteers which play a vital role during the games. Without one volunteer completing a job, things can go haywire!
Want to know how you can help? This event needs cots and you can donate for one and the cot will be given back to the community after the games. Only one participate per bed and Orillia has a shortage of those to hold 3500 participants. The Ministry bought 150 cots, the Games bought 200 cots and they are renting 150 cots.

    Committee Updates:

    Foundation Committee
    - promote goals of Rotary
    - educate our members and public at large of Rotary Foundation
    - Community recognitions at Charter night and three of our members received Paul Harris Fellow pins
    - EREY is in discussion
    - recognized a yearly budget is required so as to do public announcements for Polio events. This past October $510 was raised at Canadian Tire where we gave away buttons with donations. Need to plan early for next event and hope to raise $1000.00
    - discussed each committee to have one night a month for Rotary 101

    International Committee
    - the community’s capacity to address it’s own needs will be improved
    - the need being addressed is an important need identified by the benefiting community
    - The proposed activity will strengthen the capacity of the beneficiaries to address their own issues in the future
    - The activity be wealth generating or at least self sustaining in the community
    - The proposal have a timetable and training to transfer ownership to the beneficiaries
    - The price to the pride of the recipient of the charity is accounted for
    - Project will continue after the Rotarians leave and funding is complete
    - have committed and distributed the first $3,000 of the years budget to fund the Running Water to the Thomlong village in Laos
    - had hoped to find another International project to do directly with a partner Rotary club in another country.
thought we had a good one in Nepal for a toilet project but it did not work out.
    - also hoped to find one with the Zambia Rotarians involved with the Friendship Exchange in October. We did not define anything in particular but a few Rotarians from our club are going to Zambia in April for the return Friendship exchange.   Given how late in the Rotary year it will be after we are in Zambia any project might better be planned for the next Rotary year.
