Deborah Loosemore , executive director of the Simcoe Gilda's Club and Joe Givens director and also a Brrie Rotarian
Gilda's Club is named after Gilda Radner who was a popular comedian on late night Tv in the 1980's. She developed cancer and found through her own experience that although Cancer could be accurately diagnosed there was very little support for those patients and their families. The Gildas clubs today provide help to thousands of Cancer victims by providing counseling, guidance and social support so they can manage dealing with the cancer and with how it affects their lives and the lives of their families. The Barrie branch of Gilda's has helped an average of over 100 new cancer victims a month each month and about 1200 in 2014. The club relies entirely on donations and their budget for 2015 is approx $800,000. Deborah and Joe gave personal and touching accounts of situations where
Gildas club has helped some of their clients. This is very rewarding work for anyone who would like to volunteer to help the club with counseling or with fundraising. Deborah also invites anyone interested to visit. They are located at 10 Quarry Ridge Rd Barrie, very close to Royal Victoria hospital and can be found easily on the internet.
