Our guest speaker was Lisa McCoy from the Gravenhurst club and Steve Hayhurst also from the G. Club.  She is a tireless volunteer with children and landmine survivors in Cambodia and Burma.  She is the ED of the not for profit À Mine-Free World  Foundation`.She is also the field coordinator and founder of the Rotary Wheels for Learning and the Gravenhurst Rotary Club bicycl distribution program for children in Cambodia.  Each of the past three years has found Lisa leading  the  bicycle distribution teams from District  7010 to Cambodia , distributing a total of 3, 664 bicycles to children needing transportation to get to school .  Lisa spends up to 6 months per year in Asia.  Lisa had those going to Cambodia on the next trip stand up  .  $50 will provide a rural child with a bike to get to school and will display the Rotary logo.

Steve gave some background on Cambodia demographics.  The country was french until it gained independence in the 1950`s.  Very poor rural area.  The Khmer Rouger gained popularity and waged civil war, taking over Phnom Penh in the mid 1970`s ousting and murdering the educated class.  There were many landmines left after the genocide and war.    Cambodia lost 80% of their educators during the 1970`s.  Schools are few and far between, kids may have to walk up to 10km to get to school.  There are real class differences between the haves and have nots.    One school is being built by the Kempenfelt Rotary club, and they have 24 members going in January 2015.  Mike Kinsley provided some more information about the program.

Pictured here is Lisa with our own Leanne who is going on the next bicycle distribution trip in Winter 2015.  There are a few spots left !
