The Rotary Club of Orillia, give or take one or two, has met a total of 3,640 times. Our first regular meeting, held in the Champlain hotel, December 11, 1945. (presently named the Rodeway Inn, corner of Mississauga & Front. Built 1932).
Moving over the years …
1951 - Orillia Hotel, Peter & Colborne. Destroyed by fire, early 70s
1953 - Carter’s Restaurant (south side Mississauga, just east of Peter), also gutted by fire, June 1961
1961 - YMCA, Peter Street (across from post office). A temporary location, while
awaiting the completion of the Carter’s new Restaurant – Sundial Motor Inn, April 10, 1962. The Sundial became our home for next 49 years
2011 - Moving to several locations in an attempt to find a more permanent location. Eventually, settling here, at the Highwayman.
Today we had Doug Bunker who is the Chair and Organizer of the Orillia Perch Festival which starts from April. 16th - May.7th
Costs includes Adults = $20 and Children = $ 5.00 under age of 16.
The 36th annual event raises over $84,000 in prizes and a lund fishing boat and motor for the grand prize from many sponsors throughout the area.
This event is one of the largest in North America and International fishing tournaments. There is a lot of anglers who come back every year from the U.S. and other foreign countires to try their luck at catching a tagged perch which range in prize money from $500 up to $3,000. If the catch a tagged perch from the previous year, they pay out $50.00
They now tag fish with a 1-800# so the Angler can call in and it gives them a tracking system of where the fish are traveling, where they caught it, did they release it, etc?
The event promotes family which gets the kids out of the house and also conservation of the fisheries by catching and releasing the fish for sustainability to Lake Simcoe and Couchiching.
If you do not have a boat you can fish along Lankin Blvd., Marinas, Old train tracks at the edge of Marina, but we keep losing more access to the waters due to developement.
Finally the fish are released in secret locations and they can move quickly into different areas of the Bays, etc. So get your fishing rods out, purchase your ticket, and start fishing.
