Announcements.  Sue Croft, Membership Chair, announced a new Rotary Recognition program.  Each week, we will recognize the contributions of members to our club.  Sometimes members of our club are not aware of all that a member has contributed.  Our club has been around a long time - so there will be many interesting stories of ways members have contributed.  The first member to be recognized this week was Nancy Welton.    Nancy is the Foundation Chair and runs the dutch auctions; she stepped in to finish Chairing Lobsterfest when Past President Angela was in Australia; she works tirelessly for the train - organizing volunteers, cleaning up the ticket house, and generally helping Tom to run whatever is needed; she jumps in when anyone is absent on front desk duties; she is Chairing our Rotary committee of Show Your Support orillia - a program to support residents affected by cancer; she is always at pitch in week; big bike ride; and participates in all our social events.  Thanks so much for everything that you do for our club, Nancy !!

Reid Asselstine reported that he attended the Governor Changeover in Lindsay on Monday and that Marilyn had now joined the group of Past District Governors.  He thanked Marilyn for representing our District to the world of Rotary and also being a representative of our Club to those at District.  He commented on the amount of work required for the position and congratulated Marilyn on her achievements (Thanks, Reid!)

Kevin and Jed reported on our first Bingo night.3,000 cards were out in the community but we only sold 10%.  Income was $500.  Expenses including prizes were $3,000.  We therefore lost $2,500.  There were 2 ads and 1 article in the Packet prior to our first bingo night.  Kevin commented that he had lost a lot of sleep over this, and that his expectation was that we would simply make money right out of the gate.  However, it is clear that people need to know about our thursday bingo night and Jed detailed a new marketing plan to be implemented prior to the 2nd bingo night this thursday.  Volunteers took posters for delivery door to door.  Others volunteered to speak to nursing homes about having the bingo tickets available and to encourage them to make a bingo night for all residents; there will be broadcast emails; social media will continue to be used; 500 fridge magnets are coming;  Ralph commented that postcards distributed through the mail work well.  It is believed that the new marketing thrust will get the word out better.  Once people play, we will have them forever.  bingo players play every week.  The bingo team of Jed, Kevin, Tony T, and Nancy W will continue to work the bingo until our current contract expires on Sept 18th.  They are looking for people to come out to the bingo nights now and train to be the next team.  please contact Kevin if you are willing to do this.  Thank you to all 4 involved for your tremendous efforts to get this off the ground.  We will suceed!  We are Rotarians!

Dave Shaw announced that the family who was hosting our new incoming exchange student is unable to complete that committment.  We are therefore looking for a host family for Pia Winter from Austria who will arrive around August 22nd.  That first host family would have Pia until the end of November.  please contact Dave if you can host.

Mary Asselstine reminded us that next week is Picnic in the Park.  please contact her if you haven't signed up to bring anything.  don't forget to bring serving spoons for your dish, and she needs 2 guys to arrive a little early and move tables.

A reminder that August 19th is our annual Bob McFadden memorial golf tournament!  mark your calendars.  It is best ball; you can put in your own team of 4 or just get assigned to a team when you arrive.  You can only play 9 holes if you wish.  Some people bring libations:)

The District Learning Academy is starting.  This is an online series of questions about Rotary that will educate you on what rotary is all about and you will get to understand how to move around the rotary international website.  please contact Nancy Amos if you would like to sign up for this.  it is free

We received a thank you note from Monsignor Leigh school for the dictionaries that we delivered there.

There are more golf tournaments you can attend:   Midland on Aug 27th with proceeds to our Foundation and OPP golf on July 18th.  contact Nancy amos for details if you are interested.

Nancy read a resignation letter from Gord Michener.  Gord advised that he really enjoyed our club, but now that he was 74, he found himself involved in too many community things, so felt that some had to go.  He wished our club well and advised he would still be available to volunteer at any of our events if we needed him.

Tom Bristow announced that we need volunteers for the train (selling tickets) - particularly for the scottish festival weekend.  A list of dates will be circulated.  All rotarians are expected to volunteer ONCE this summer.  PLEASE SIGN UP!

50/50 --First prize was won by Brian Peterson and 2nd prize by Anne Zeigler.  They both donated their winnings back.  Thank you Rotarians!

Sargeant at Arms was Randy Klein.  He fined the birthday table; anyone who hasn't turned on their air conditioner yet; and anyone who hasn't taken holidays yet.

HAPPY: Tony T thanked Rotarians who came to his company open house celebrations last week.  He said it really meant a lot to him.

HAPPY: Anne Zeigler was happy for her annual kayaking holiday

HAPPY: Jed was happy to be back to normal after his vacation.  He spoke to Chris Hatfield while on vacation and they discussed Mia - the girl our club assisted to attend a science event.  Hatfield was very impressed with Mia!  And Jed said it was strange to be talking to Hatfield about this location connection!

HAPPY: Deb was happy to attend Mariposa and speak to Gordon Lightfoot.  She also got her picture taken with him!

HAPPY: Randy was happy to visit his Mom in Idaho.  She returned here with him and he had another happy buck that she was leaving next tuesday!

HAPPY/SAD: Roman announced that he had taken a position as CEO of Walkerton Clean Water Centre.  They made him an offer he couldn't refuse.  Unfortunately this means he will have to leave Rotary.  He is contemplating keeping his Orillia house as a cottage and returning in 3 years time.  If that happens, he would like to come back to our rotary club.

Our Youth Exchange Student, Cynthia, was our guest speaker.  Cynthia had a great slide show (although long!) of her entire year here with us in Canada.  She had many great experiences.  Thanks to all who hosted.  We are building international goodwill among countries - one student at a time.  It was great to see how much she grew while staying here.  Good luck in your future endeavours!
