:Jed Levene  Our very creative Seargent at Arms was Jed (Clampett) Levine

Jed asked each table if they knew the origin of specific phrases and if they didn't, everyone at the table had to contribute.  Just for fun, here are the phrases - but not the answers!!

sincere, raining cats & dogs, spill the beans, saved by the bell (Cliff Whitfield got this one! and had to pay 2 bucks for it!!), throw the baby out with the bathwater (Peter Borutsky got that one), going the whole nine yards, show your true colours, and eat humble pie.

Happy Bucks:

  • Tony Telford's happy that his daughter's following in the family's service footsteps by going volunteering in an African hospital for a month; raising the $3000.00 needed all on her own! yes
  • Guest from the morning club (and Student of the Month's uncle) Scott Shaw was happy for not being "boo'ed" by the lunch club.
  • Roman's happy he had an opportunity to attend the Kiwanis 90th anniversary party and learned that their initiatives and mission is very similary to ours.
  • Leanne is happy that she's still on her training schedule to run the half marathon in October.
  • Guest Brian Ferguson is happy that he found his winning 50/50 ticket in time!!
  • Ralph was happy for the opportunity to attend a Gravenhurst meeting and reconnect with old friends there.

Rotary Student of the Month Presentations!

Our Guest Speaker this week was the Director and Chief of the Simcoe Paramedic Services, Andrew Robert.

Andrew has a distinguished 29 years in the Paramedic Services industry and has worked in a number of capacities all over the province.  He spoke to us on various components of the Service and included such facts as the services offered, mission statement, "did you know..." facts, the governance of the program, quality standards, clinical initiaves, response times, types of paramedics, the number of km travelled each year (over 3 million!), operating costs and a subject that is near and dear to all of us: the Public Access Defibrillation program.

There are now 600 defibrillators across Simcoe county and they have saved 9 lives, including 2 in our own neighbourhood:  in 2009 at the Orillia YMCA and in 2010 at Brian Orser Arena.

Andrew left us with a very important message:

DISCO SAVES LIVES!!

Anyone can use a defibrillator and anyone can do chest compressions.  You know you're doing the right number of compressions/min if you sing (preferably in your head) the song from
the BeeGee's and "Saturday Night Fever" Stayin' Alive, Stayin' Alive.  Sing the disco song and save a life!
