Rotary Fun Fact
Rotary License Plates.... or..... Carl Dickson's License Plates?

Past District Governor Carl Dickson, was aware that the Ontario Ministry of Transportation was starting to sell personalized vehicle license plates which could feature logos of professional sports teams and other organizations. In 1999 he went to the license bureau in Orillia and asked for a plate with a Rotary wheel on it and he found out that none existed. He had to obtain ministry approval, which took him three years and required, among other things, the consent of all the District Governors in Ontario, a detailed description of Rotary and a full disclosure of how any royalties would be used. Finally, in October of 2002, the ministry agreed, provided that Carl would either pre-sell or purchase outright 100 license plates at $52.10 each.
The Rotary license plate contains a Rotary wheel, two digits, the letters RI and two additional digits and Carl earmarked a royalty of $2.50 per plate for PolioPlus. The Governors in the other five Ontario districts supported the effort both financially and by pre-selling the 100 plates.
In February of 2003, the first $1,000 in royalties was sent to the Rotary Foundation.

- Tony and Cathleen's Euchre night has been rescheduled! Thanks to some bad snowy/windy weather, they had to cancel last weekend for the safety of all. Euchre night will now be held on February 8th so do not forget to let them know that you are coming and remember, it is BYOB and a potluck!

- This year is Rotary Orillia's 50th anniversary for hosting International Student Weekend. Laura tried to tell Mario that he would be hosting ten students and that the party is at his house but he was having none of that so WE STILL NEED HOSTS! Please let Laura know asap that you are willing to host a student or two!

- Tony proposes that we hold a Social Event on the Keewatin this late spring/summer. For those that have not had the chance to see the Keewatin, it would definitely be an memorable event. He even suggested we all dress according to the time period but we will see just how well that one goes over. You never know Tony, you just might get your way on that one but you need to decide, just what era are we dressing in? This think launched in 1907 and sailed till 1966!

    Guest Speakers
We welcomed David Blevins as our guest speaker this week to talk to us about the Keewatin.
Anticipating his retirment from the insurance industry, David became a volunteer with the S.S. Keewatin Project in 2017. Joining approximately 75 volunteers dedicated to the restoration and upkeep of this magnificent ship.
Upon his retirement in 2018, David undertook the respoinsibility for the ship's century old steam engine. His interst in the ship, comes from his family as he had two uncles who were Captains on the Great Lakes under steam.
David is not the Engineering Coordinator on board and is supported by a dedicated team who service the main engine and deck macheinery, all of which are operational by way of compressed air. IN the Sprng of 2019, he attended Steam School on the 75 year old Liberty Ship John W. Brown in Baltimore. He now continues to be delighted in his retirement by his involvement with the Keewatin and looks forward to sharing his interests with all who will listen.
