50 50 and Sarge and Happy Bucks

50 50 winners were Dean and Andrew and both generously donated their winnings back

SARGE  today was DEAN

Dean returned to Tony Telford his rusty bolt cutters which had been left behind after lunch last week and presenting the risk of misuse as a dangerous weapon, which justified Tony getting the first fine of the day.

Because the 50 /50 winners donated back their winnings , they were excused from fines but those who won consolation prises had to throw in a buck.  Kevin, Tom and Rick were late and threw in a dollar each and Reid got centered out for having a glow on. Angela got fined $2. because there were no birthdays this week and Ralph fined twice. Once for being late fo selling 50/50 and again for being repetitive with his ticket money announcement.

Happy Bucks

Happy bucks were coming in too fast for your editor to catch all of them but one of Tony's was to have his son return home . Bill Darker , happy to be back to rotary, Rick because his daughter did well at volleyball and her team won bronze, Ralph because he witnessed Roy,s remarkable speech at council, and  Andrew because Orillia's Opera house will be able to present world renowned poet , Billy Collins ( past poet laureate for the U.S.A.  )

Julie was happy to have attended a conference in Vegas and although she could not tell us what did happen there she said said there was no gambling involved. Also she plugged her wrapped  gift service which she provides  for anyone in need of a mothers day gift. Marilyn was happy to have attended again the Washago wild game dinner and won a new motorcycle helmet. Finally Jayne thew in a dollar because she had raised over $500 for her charity walk. And of course Reid was happy to have his friend Donna with him today.

Trivia Corner
Trivia

The Rotary Club of Orillia, give or take one or two, has met a total of 3,640 times. Our first regular meeting, held in the Champlain hotel, December 11, 1945. (presently named the Rodeway Inn, corner of Mississauga & Front. Built 1932).

Moving over the years …

1951 -  Orillia Hotel, Peter & Colborne. Destroyed by fire, early 70s
1953 - Carter’s Restaurant (south side Mississauga, just east of Peter), also gutted   by fire, June 1961
1961 - YMCA, Peter Street (across from post office). A temporary location, while
awaiting the completion of the Carter’s new Restaurant – Sundial Motor Inn, April 10, 1962. The Sundial became our home for next 49 years
2011 -  Moving to several locations in an attempt to find a more permanent location. Eventually, settling here, at the Highwayman.

Program
Michael and Roy tag teamed a presentation on Orillia's project to convert St Pauls United church which is downtown at the corner of Peter and Coldwater roads to a dual purpose community building.   The church has committed to the plan and funds have been raised for most of the costs and renovations to make the transformation begin in August .

Highlights of the project are replacing pews with comfortable and portable seating,  reconstructing the front of the church to have a large flat stage easier to accommodate various activities, removal of the large old church organ and replacing it with a modern digital model and adding theater lighting with a new sound system.  Other renovations make the building more suited to public use.   The building will then meet the needs for economical venue seating about 400.  Right now the only comparable space is the Orillia Opera house which seats 700 and is much more expensive.

Donations from service clubs , government grants and individuals are being requested to complete the project
