Announcements:

Dues were mentioned again, there remain a few straggler's.

Tony the transporter Antidormi  is looking for  gentlemen to be designated drivers / chauffers for ladies after  the GNO.   He got enough  hands raised to manage but if you wish to help , give him  a call

Marilyn has reminded us of the upcoming Bras for a cause event at Hawkridge and that our own rotary brazier is proudly on displays at Deans flooring emporium. Stop in and  Step up to get your vote in so our bra qualifies for the big show.

Nancy Amos still has lots of tickets for the big  GNO ,   buy or sell if you can,  the more the merrier

And again with the GNO, Wendy would love more stuff.   door prizes or auction items ,  if you can find something please let her know or bring it to lunch on 18th.

Tony asked for help with the big train track project scheduled for the weekend but  unfortunately there has been a problem acquiring the heavy equipment and so it has been cancelled for now.  Many thanks for those who volunteered but when the project can be rescheduled it will be announced .

Doug has bells ringing again and has initiated the sign up sheet.  If you missed today you will probably still have a chance next week.

Following Announcements our guest Guest Will Hugh spoke for a few minutes about what had occurred in South Korea and how our own Tony Telford responded to a life threatening need when it arose on that final day.  And for giving service above self , Tony received an award and a standing ovation from everyone.

Sarge and Happy Bucks

Ralph is our sarge for October and he shared a short sad story about how a flight from Alberta was held up while flight attendants tried to tape up a broken overhead compartment supposedly due to a lady Rotarian from our club whose carry on was too large to fit in.  Although the explanation transferred the blame to an over zealous good Samaritan fellow Rotarian ( male of course) who actually applied the muscle. Marilyn was none the less given a fine.  The tone for the day then turned a little sexist as a fine for those who had not yet sold a GNO ticket was specifically given to the girls only.

Poor Ralph then had another short story prepared for us about how he had to buy some companions a round of beers to make amends for wearing a Trump shirt that had been given him at last weeks lunch meeting by Tony Antidormi. And so Tony was fined.  Wendy and Chuck then had a fight about wanting to pay each others fines  because due to Chucks illegible writing on the guest register , Wendy had mispronounced a guests name and so despite their gallantry  in true Ralph fashion,  both were fined. Carl and John  were fined for having extra name tags , despite plausible explanations, no excuses allowed, and both were fined.

Kevin started happy bucks because Michelle had a successful operation and can now do sit-ups. Andrew had a couple of happy bucks , first of course because he is a bluejays fan and also because he found from a discussion with Will Pugh that there exists Shuttleworths in rotary , one if a Burlington club and another in Africa. Don had a happy 5 because although he would be away and miss GNO, he would be at Mount Sinai getting some long awaited treatment.  Anne Ziegler was happy to have had a sister visit from Edmonton and that we don't have the snow fall that they just got. Bill Darker also had family visit and was grateful for a wonderful thanksgiving get together. Nicole is happy because she just found out that her sister is expecting a baby.  Nancy Amos had a buck for having had a wonderful thanksgiving  at a wedding in Georgia. Tony Telford is very happy to have a visit today from the friends he met in South Korea especially Aziz who had the close encounter at the hospital. Doug finished off the Happy Bucks with gratitude for a wonderful ATV excursion in the Madawaska Valley.

Program

Kevin introduced our speaker today,  Mr Chris Hazel.

Chris moved to Orillia in 2007 and is a stay at home dad looking after three young children.  He is also the vice president of the community Foundation of Orillia and Vice Chair of the Sharing Place food bank and the Sec Treasurer of the Huronia Cultural Campus Foundation and an active community volunteer. Previous to coming to Orillia, Chris worked in high tech industries but his most memorable experiences were when he worked as a Canadian Diplomat in Nairobi, Kenya.

Chris told us about how he was first hired  to be with the foreign service.  Although he finished law school he felt the urge for what might be more rewarding work and looked at the possibility of  serving overseas meeting his goals.  He was accepted but first had to go through years of training and waiting for a post.  Finally after further training in Guatemala he got a post in Nairobi Africa.  His embassy, due to its location also served surrounding African countries.  One of his frequent duties was to visit the refugee camps because then as is now there were armed conflicts raging although the camps are now about 5 times as  large with populations as many as 500,000.   They were mostly populated with women children who fled for their lives from  aggression by both government and rebel forces. amoung them were boys who escaped being pressed into armed gangs.  Most refugees wanted to return one day to their homeland but those who gave up that hope wanted to emigrate to safe countries such as Canada and Chris spent a lot of time interviewing applicants.  Of course relatively few would be allowed to emigrate and in deciding who would come over great care had to be taken to be sure that not only was there the legitimate and desperate need but also that there was no security concerns that would negate an application.  In spite of the stressful responsibilities of the job Chris also found some off duty time to explore and shared a few stories of how beautiful the safari parks and beaches are.
