Birthdays, Anniversaries, Announcements

Orillia Rotary Club President Laura Welcomed everyone to the Tri Club cocktail Meeting held at the Best Western Hotel .   Representatives attended from both Thursday Morning Lakeland  Club  and the Washago Club
Al Thomson was celebrating a birthday and received both a song and a  candlelit cupcake.  Also Laura had a birthday on the 22nd so we had an encore.
For Club anniversaries we congratulated Don Whitfield in absentia for 54 years as of Jan 15th.

Announcement

Laura gave us a Rotary 101 , something about Paul Harris.  and then also announced that the 2nd Mapleleaf Masterpiece for the 2017  Orillia streets alive displays was not yet fully funded. However after two or three Rotarians fought it out over the privilege it was quickly realised.
There is an upcoming Hospital Foundation planning meeting ( Feb 7 , 4PM)  at which Rotary has been invited to send a couple of representatives.Tony Telford stepped up  but there is still room for one more
Regretfully due to a perfect storm of circumstances, The annual Student Weekend had to be cancelled this year but will return in 2018.
Tony has tickets remaining for the Friday evening social at the Geneva with the Fireside Players but by the time you read this , you missed it.
Doug Langman announced that Following another successful Salvation army Christmas kettle campaign, the SA are inviting the volunteers to a thank you, at the citadel this Sunday , probably involving food and refreshments but again by the time you read this, you may have missed it.
Tammy Lee from Washago Club invites  Rotarians toa cocktail do at the Washago Community center Feb 23rd at 5:00 PM  , also that there is an art contest they are sponsoring but entries are required by Feb 28th. and probably best of all there is another Beer Tasting fund raiser on March 25th  ( tickets available through Washago Rotarians )  and  watch again for the Wild Game Supper coming in April.

Sarge and Happy Bucks

Our Sarge again today is Greg Parker,  and he gave the guest clubs a taste of what we have to go through each Tuesday.  Julie, Megan and Nancy were each fined for talking through the 4 way test. Tony Telford was fined for insulting "money" which being a banker the sarge took personally. and then remembering that Tony had referred to the Geneva theater as the "G" spot  gave him a second fine.  Greg also gave out the usual fines for 50/50 winners.

There were also of course happy bucks for birthdays , for the tri club meeting , for various experiences of kindness and upcoming vacations.

Program

Our speakers this evening were Cathy Oconnor and Laura who because of their disabilities were able to give us personal first hand insights into the concerns of both the blind and deaf who sometimes struggle with accessibility on a daily basis.   Laura who has been blind since the age of 17 has with her  guide dog , a black lab , "Norma Jean'  which accompanies her everywhere . Laura is a registered Masseuse and lives and works in Orillia.  Laura reviewed the various legislations enacted since 2005 as well as bills scheduled  to come into force by 2025 all of which improve accessibility for disabled . Of concern are things we take for granted such as  accessability  to buildings, public services and employment equity.
Cathy has with her a hearing Eye dog  and enlightened us with stories of some of the silly things people  who don't know any better or aren't thinking do ;  like  someone who bent over and in a loud voice  addressed her dog when actually speaking to Cathy.
