The respite it gives the guest to be able to come home to the Fisher House and relax and have a home cooked meal is a great stress relief when you’ve been at the hospital all day and must return in the evening. The house features an outdoor kitchen. This makes it easier for larger groups to volunteer. It’s a wonderful thing to do as a family or a team builder for groups.

Seafood Spectacular Work Days
It is hard to believe that we are about to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of our Seafood Spectacular on Thursday, November 3rd. It is even harder to believe the many improvements we have made to both the menu and the site!

Every year we have several work days prior to the actual event to prepare the site.  This year we have selected October 22nd and October 29th as the dates.  The 22nd is an off week for the Gators and on the 29th the game will be in Jacksonville at 3:30.  We plan to open the gates at 8:00 AM on each day with donuts and end the day at noon with lunch.  It is not necessary to be there at 8:00 AM sharp.  We know that is pretty early for a lot of us on a Saturday morning.  Your help will be appreciated whenever you can get there.

Tickets and sponsor opportunities are available.  You can purchase your tickets at your weekly Rotary meeting or online at:  http://rotarygainesville.org/Seafood/ Tickets remain only $35.00 each or our special buy 4 and get the 5th as a bonus ticket.

For those who prefer an alternative we will offer non seafood entrees.  Please let us know when you purchase your tickets so we can prepare enough for the land lubbers!

I look forward to seeing you at one or both workdays and also at the Seafood Spectacular.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference
The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Conference - RYLA - is a thriving international leadership program actively endorsed in over 528 Rotary International Districts, including District 6970 in northeast Florida. The program promotes leadership skill-building, networking and preparation for college for upcoming high school juniors and seniors who display leadership potential. The aim is to launch already talented young people back into their communities, inspired and provided with fresh ideas, understandings, and skills. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards also seeks to send students back to their communities better equipped to become leaders of tomorrow and prepared to apply what they have learned at the conference. The students chosen for these scholarships exhibit leadership qualities and possess the potential to become leaders in community service, school, and their chosen careers.   Our Club is sponsoring 5 students for this conference.  The conference is being held from June 16 – 19, 2016 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.  On Saturday, June 18, 2016, there will be a formal dinner beginning promptly at 6:30 PM in the University Center at the University of North Florida.  There will be a motivational speaker, and a dance afterward for the students.

Rotarians who would like to attend the dinner may sign up at http://www.ryla6970.org/dinner-reservations/The cost for the dinner is $20 per person.  It would be a great way to support RYLA and the students our Club is sponsoring.

April is Party for the Planet month.  Who knew?

Many zoos that are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums will be celebrating environmental conservation in honor of earth day throughout April.  Our own Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo is both accredited and celebrating with a Party for the Planet.

On April 16, the Sunrise Rotary Club of Gainesville and the Rotary Club of Gainesville will be hosting a joint fellowship family evening at the zoo.  The event will include a zoo tour in small groups, separate workshops for kids, a very interesting adult game designed to get to know your fellow club members, social/happy hour and a catered dinner.  Our goal is to provide an opportunity to interact with other club members, bring the entire family to a fun kids & adult outing, have a nice dinner, and raise a little bit of money for the zoo.

Net Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the new Florida Wildlife exhibit being built.  The exhibit will begin restoring the existing Florida pond into a Florida Wildlife Ecosystem.  This new exhibit will expand on the zoo's concept of immersion and holistic ecosystem design.  In modern zoos it is extremely important that an animal exhibit emphasize the relationships between the native wildlife and the ecosystem in which it exists.  The Teaching Zoo will showcase the relationships between a variety of native birds, their native habitat and how and where guests and visitors to Florida can enjoy that ecosystem.  The project creates immersive areas to draw the zoo visitor into that world. The Florida Wildlife Ecosystem will become a destination geared towards unique family-oriented experiences, encouraging an atmosphere to spark curiosity, learning and entertainment.  Unlike anything offered in Gainesville or North Central Florida, the project presents a multi-dimensional venue to create relationships not only between species and cultures, but also amongst family members.

Let us join will follow Rotarians for a fun filled evening of good fellowship and cheer while at the same time raise some funds for the Florida Wildlife Ecosystem.

Exciting Announcement & Opportunity
Dear Club Presidents,

I am excited to announce our District was selected as the Charity of the Day at this year's PGA Players Championship. Rotary will be receiving media exposure with local, national, and international media outlets.  We will be listed on the tournament’s website and featured in their 50 day countdown radio and TV spots.  We will also be listed in the daily pairing guides handed out at the gates.  Our Rotary Logo will be featured on LED boards around the course and on their social media sites.

Our volunteers wearing Rotary shirts were granted permission to hand out Rotary information at each entrance gate. Between 23 - 25 thousand attendees will receive a card with information about Rotary in our District and an End Polio Now pin during Friday’s tournament day.  This is an amazing opportunity to BRAND Rotary in our district and attract some new members for our clubs!

Now for the club opportunity if your club chooses to participate. We have received 1,000 DISCOUNTED Stadium Pass tickets that are good for ANY one day of the tournament:    Tuesday - Sunday   May 10 - 15, 2016. The discounted tickets are only $45.00 and there are no additional taxes on these consignment tickets!  Twenty dollars of the ticket price will go to the PGA Tour's First Tee Program for youth and $25 will come back to your club for you to use for any of your local youth programs. The Stadium Passes grant access to more than 19 on-site public venues; local food and beverage options, rope-side access to your favorite players, and much more!   TOBY KEITH IN CONCERT - See Billboard's country music star of the decade perform at the 17th green on Tuesday for Military Appreciation Day at THE PLAYERS'.

We have placed the order form on our district website along with a marketing flyer on how to participate in this opportunity. The tickets are strictly consignment, unsold tickets can be returned by April 25th.

Here’s the opportunity:  No heavy lifting required as the program and discipline are all handled by Santa Fe College Zoo Technology students and teachers/aides who accompany the kids.  You get to be a fun “aunt or uncle” who enjoys the zoo with the kids, listens to them read about the animals and environments they are learning about, and possibly get a little messy with related crafts and games.

Here are the details on the program and how to sign up to join us for a Wednesday afternoon to hang out with some great 2 and 3rd graders from Irby and Alachua Elementary beginning February 17:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090a45afa728ab9-rotary2.

Our Rotary support provides the books and materials, the Alachua County School Partnership Program coordinates the effort and we just get to enjoy some kids and share our love of reading.  Rotary spouses and young adult family members are also welcome as volunteers!

     2015 Service Above Self Recognition

Join us on Tuesday as our club recognizes the 30th recipient of the Service Above Self Award.  It is the highest recognition our club bestows.  E. T. York established an endowment to fund in perpetuity the Rotary Club of Gainesville Service Above Self Award to express his appreciation for the support provided him during his tenure as the Rotary District 6970 Governor.  In 2010 the award was renamed for the late Dr. E. T. York and his wife Vam.  It is presented annually and symbolizes Rotary’s commitment to service and the desire of the Rotary Club of Gainesville to encourage and recognize service to others in our community.  The award takes its name from the Rotary motto “Service Above Self”.  The recipient is an individual or organization from the Gainesville/Alachua County area that has rendered outstanding, dedicated and unselfish service to enhance the quality of life of the citizens and youth of our area.

Get ready for World Polio Day
Join us on 23 October for our third annual End Polio Now: Make History Today event. We’ll be streaming live from New York City, so tune in at 18:30 New York time (UTC-4) to watch a global update on the status of the fight to eradicate polio, and take part in the conversation. Guests will include representatives from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners, celebrity polio ambassadors, and polio survivors.

Check out the World Polio Day tool kit for ideas on how your club or district can celebrate World Polio Day. Among the suggestions: hosting a viewing party, contacting your local news media about the importance of eradicating polio, advocating government support for ending the disease, and organizing a fundraising event. The tool kit also contains sample Facebook and Twitter posts that you can share. Use #endpolio to follow and join the global conversation on social media.

You’ll also find social media graphics, a sample press release, an outreach guide, and other resources on the World Polio Day page at endpolio.org.

Polio Immunization & West Africa Project Fair Trip for Rotarians-November 2015
In November 2015, North American Rotarians will travel to Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, for a life changing experience.
Have you ever heard a Rotarian speak about their personal experience participating in a polio eradication exercise, a cleft lip/cleft palate mission, or work on a humanitarian grant?
These trips have a profound effect upon the individual.  The experiences you have stay with you forever.  You get up early in the morning, travel with local Rotarians to a village, health clinic or impoverished neighborhood, and for the next few hours, you change.  Small children come up to you to say thank you.  Mothers and fathers smile at you knowing that you are giving their child a chance for a better life.  You meet with the leaders in the village to learn of their needs and their hopes.  It is hot; it is dusty; it makes you uncomfortable; it is exquisite.
Trip Dates:  November 10 – 19, 2015
Travel to:  Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa
Per Person Price:  $1,779, double occupancy
Program includes:  Hotel accommodations, transfers, most meals, polio immunization exercise, hands-on community service field work, West Africa Project Fair registration, special Rotary and fellowship events, sightseeing, etc.

The West Africa Project Fair is endorsed by Rotary’s Reach Out to Africa Committee (ROTA), who is trying to generate greater connectivity between the African and North American Rotarians to generate greater support of the projects of Africa.  Involvement in this Fair would not only provide an opportunity for project support, it also helps Rotary members grow and understand the benefits of being a Rotarian.  Involvement in Rotary gives the ordinary Rotarian extraordinary opportunities to do things that they could never do anywhere else.  This trip is just such an experience.

If you have an interest in participating in this project contact Ivan Oelrich in person, by e-mail (ivan@oelrichconstruction.com) or cell (352) 318-4448.

Craft Talks

We are starting a new round of Craft Talks starting on 8/18 through 9/29.  All members new, and older members who have not given their Craft Talk are encouraged to book a date ASAP.  Scheduling will be first come first served.
Please contact Casey Scott to schedule your Craft Talk at: caseyscott44@gmail.comor you can text or call ph: (352) 514-7679.

Suggestions for your Craft Talk are listed below:

Your Rotary Craft Talk
The Craft Talk is an important part of  helping  your fellow Rotarians get to know you and how you can help make our Rotary club better.  The primary purpose is to introduce you, to let your fellow Rotarians know more about you.
As you have observed, our meetings are always busy so your talk is limited to three (3) minutes.
We are not going to get the stage hook and pull you off, but please be aware of your time limit.
Don't stress, you can get a lot communicated in three (3) minutes.
Cover these three key points:
1.      Repeat your name.  Let people hear you say your name.  Repetition builds reputation.  Repeating your name will help your listeners remember who you are.
2.      Tell the club a little about your background, where you grew up and why are you in Gainesville.  Touch on family, but don't make this an autobiography.  Hit the high lights that identify who you are.
3.      Tell the members what your do professionally  and some of your leisure activities that will let members get to know you better.
If possible, your sponsor should introduce you.  But don't worry if your sponsor is unavailable for any reason, a member of Rotary will be proud to introduce you.

Our History Is Online

The Rotary Club of Gainesville was founded in August 1918.  Our club was sponsored by the Jacksonville Rotary Club which was the first Rotary club in Florida.   We have a rich history with many accomplishments throughout the years.  After several years diligently piecing together the history of the Rotary Club of Gainesville, John Gregory and his committee of Parker Lawrence, Karen Sandelin and Kay Mitchell have turned it over to George Sims to place on the Rotary website.

You must know your Login Name and Password for ClubRunner to get access.  Once logged in, go to the Home Page, right column in the Site Pages Section.  If you don’t know how to log in, contact Tracy Cowart:  trcowart01@live.com and she can furnish you the necessary login information.

I encourage everyone to use ClubRunner.  It contains pictures of and contact information for all club members, the weekly bulletin, announcements, membership proposal forms and a list of all committees and their chairs as well as easy access to officer and board of director email and contact information and much much more. Invite your friends to learn more about Rotary with the intention of nominating them for membership.

Susan Spain is hosting a series of breakfasts at her home.

Send the contact information of anyone you would like to propose to susanspain.rotary@gmail and she will get them on the invitation list.
