The 2017 Lakes Area Scholarship winners are Emily Papiez (Northern High School) and Peter Stewart who was home schooled.  
Emily is a member/officer of National Honor Society and Math National Honor Society, plays the flute in the NHS marching band and is active in NHS Interact.  She uses her skills in all these area a a leader and shared them with others as a mentor to her peers and elementary students.  Emily was employed by Rotpac, a company that times and scored local races and marathons, and helps care for her younger siblings as both parents work. While leaving the door open to new and challenging possibilities, Emily is inclined toward a degree in Biology with a concentration in neuroscience.  She has applied and been accepted to several colleges and universities but, is awaiting further word from others before making a commitment as to where she will attend.  
Peter will begin his college years at Oakland Community College with the goal of a career as a Mechanical Engineer in the automotive industry.  He has combined education and service with his interest in woodturning.  As a member of Michigan Woodturners he participates in making tops for waiting rooms in children's hospitals across the state, bowls for the Empty Bowls fundraiser at Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and donates to charitable auctions such as our Wine Tasting event. He has also become an skilled guitarist and placed second in the North American Invitational competition.  Peter has been employed at Subway for years as a pre-closer.
