Door Prize:  Won by John Coxon - donated by Rohan

50/50:  Brad Owen drew the Jack of Spades - the pot still lives and now stands at 1343.00 & growing with only 8 cards left

Humour:  Provided by Dr John Rodway

Dr Rodway was going to educate us today and explain the differences in the
thinking and moods between a man and woman.
The couple had planned a great day - him golfing with buddies and her - a day of shopping followed by a fine dinner.
At dinner she tried starting a conversation about the great day she had and how nice it was to be here at dinner. All he could do was grunt and say "yea". She could not understand it as the day had started out so wonderful.
As they made their way home he kept muttering " how could I miss a 2 foot putt" - and thus the difference between a man and woman.

Program:

Michele Gage introduced our speaker - Kawartha Lakes Fire Prevention Officer - Fritz Mattern. He has been with the fire service since 1998 and recently appointed as lead Fire Prevention Officer and is also an assistant to the Ontario Fire Marshall.

Fritz started off by stating that he will never see success - only the monetary results in fire loss prevention. All his work is based on the Ontario Fire Code (a pretty thick book).

All his work and examining of residential or business premises is based on entry/exit points, building materials, interior finishes, building services (duct work, appliances etc), smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (all working), storage of products and materials and are they a hazard.

Fritz advised they do primarily commercial inspections and must do nursing homes on an annual basis.

Fritz asked what we thought the number one cause of fire is in the summer is? No one knew - answer is cooking. In the fall it changes to furnaces and fireplaces.

Fritz then advised that any new building must now have strobe lights in the bedrooms and hallways as it has been a proven fact that arouses even those that are deaf.

There were a few questions on commercial properties - clarifications and the cost of an inspection ($65.00 per hour). If there are issues the fire service will work with that owner to get them rectified in a timely manner.

Brad Owen then thanked our guest speaker and advised that a gift in his name would be made to Polio Plus

There being no other business for the good of Rotary, the meeting was adjourned.
