Our Guest speaker Elisha Miller
Humourist Cathy Danbrook: Age related dementia - some of us need to take notes.
Student of the Month Awards:
Our students were introduced individually by their respective school representatives. Each and every one has achieved success by showing leadership and delivering notable contributions to both the school and the greater community. Fund raising, sports, motivational speaking, tutoring are some areas in which these future leaders have excelled.
Guest Speaker:
Elisha Miller presented at the District Conference and impressed Dan and Blair enough that they wanted her to come to speak to us about her experiences as a Rotary exchange student. Elisha is presently completing her final year in high school since she missed a year while she was away in Denmark.
Elisha brought with her some photos to give us a glimpse into the locale and her experiences while telling us about her interaction with her host families. Elisha was impressed by the transportation systems and geography in what is a relatively small nation. A highlight of her trip was a coach tour of Europe, taken with other Rotary exchange students during the final months of her stay. On the way home, Elisha was acutely aware of the changes in her life resulting from her trip abroad. She said that “it was the best year of her life, but also the hardest” but worth the effort. She is appreciative of what it has done for her and expressed her thanks to “Rotary” for the chance to go and to us for the great lunch.
Sharon gave Elisha a CKL “Osprey” pin to add to the collection on her jacket and thanked her for coming to speak.
Past Pres. Dan proceeded with the draw for the door prize which, in the absence of a regular door prize, came as a liberated denizen of Dave’s trunk in the form of a pink genuine imitation feather boa for our prize winner, Christine. Christine’s comment as she approached the front of the room was something to the effect that she never wins anything.
On to the 50/50 draw which, for those not in attendance, was won by our guest from Tibet who immediately announced that the prize of almost $2000 dollars would be donated to the school project they support in Tibet.
Ed. note: The 50/50 draw was begun out of a desire to support Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio. Half of the proceeds of our weekly draw goes to that cause. This observer applauds the the fact that the ‘other’ half is going to a deserving cause as well.
The winning ticket this week was held by the lady who ‘never’ wins anything, Christine who drew the 4 of diamonds and netted $5. And so, the search for the elusive Joker begins anew.
Our finemaster Dan did an impressive job of collecting happy dollars from many members present. Your scribe was so enthralled, he forgot to record any of them! I assure you, that won’t happen again, this month.
Next week (November 9th) will be our Remembrance Day meeting. The duty roster will be limited to
