Michelle introduced our guest speaker today.

Anne Overhoff is the Director of Critical Care, Medicine and Patient Flow at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay.  Anne is here today to talk to us about Organ and Tissue Donation.  Anne is a Registered Nurse and after nine years in health related administrative work, she took a position at ‘the Ross’ about six years ago.

The Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) is a not-for-profit agency of the Government of Ontario. TGLN plans, promotes, coordinates and supports organ and tissue donation and transplantation across Ontario. Its mission is to save and enhance lives through the gift of organ and tissue donation and transplantation in Ontario. In November of 2014,  ‘the Ross’ became a ‘Gift of LIfe’ hospital.  Now, whenever a death occurs in patients who satisfy criteria for donation, hospital staff contact TGLN to ascertain whether the patient has registered as a potential organ or tissue donor.

You can be a donor. But remember that signing a donor card and sticking it in your wallet or purse doesn’t necessarily mean that upon your death someone will know. You have to register with TGLN to make sure that when you die, the right questions will be asked. And you can register by going to beadonor.ca

One organ donor can save up to 8 lives and enhance as many as 75 more through the gift of tissue.

Questions?.... go to the website.  Anne answered one question that gets asked often. How will you know I’m dead?  Brain activity can be measured. If it’s not working, they can tell.  If your heart stops and won’t restart, it’s pretty much obvious that you are suffering from something from which there is no chance of recovery. At that point, a conversation ensues between the health professionals and the family as to quality of life and cessation of life support.

Another question was relative to how the donor would look in an open casket.  Without knowing there was an undertaker in the audience,  Anne said funeral directors were pretty good at making people look ok. (Your humble scribe might have used a more superlative term.)

Anne recounted a personal experience from her nursing days when she was part of the team tasked with preparing the deceased patient for transplant surgery.  She was gratified to be part of a team helping many patients through one selfless act of the donor.

More than 85% of Ontarians support the concept of organ and tissue donation and transplant however, only 25% have registered their consent to donate.

There being nothing more for the good of Rotary, PP Dan left us with a thought; "A committee is a group of the unprepared, appointed by the unwilling, to do the unnecessary." Fred Allen
