Program:
Professor Josh Feltham is a full time professor at the School of Environmental and Natural Resource sciences, and the coordinator of the Ecosystem Management Program. In his spare time he is working to complete his PhD in Conservation Biology at Trent University.
Josh will leave this week for Costa Rica, taking a group of SSFC students for an international field experience where they will learn about community-based approaches to resolving environmental issues. Josh and his wife lived in Costa Rica for a time before joining SSFC. This will be his eighth group of students in an ongoing environmental studies program. Students are billeted with local families visiting a village called Parismena. They learn about the street level economy, how hard it is to develop income and the affect of external forces on that income.
The academic aspect of the field trip is the student participation in preservation efforts of the locals toward the reduction of poaching of sea turtles and their eggs.
The result is that students get real life experience and begin to realize the impact their actions and decisions have in the community. Altogether, an interesting and enlightening presentation for which Jason thanked Josh on behalf of the club.
There being nothing further for the good of Rotary, the meeting was adjourned.
Your scribe,
Jim Mackey
