Rotary Trivia!

October 30, 2019

WELCOME & TRADITIONS

President Frank Towner opened with the Pledge of Allegiance, and Stephen Nunley followed with his Thought for The Day,

“Fall down seven times, and get up eight.”

A while back, Nancy Potter was collecting laptops to be shipped overseas. Now, President Frank is looking for a laptop for the Club. If you have one to donate, please talk to Frank!

Juliet Gibbs had the winning red ticket last week, and walked away with Sunday Brunch for 2 at Banfi’s.

International Service Committee meets tomorrow (1st Wed.) at Coltivare, 11:00 a.m., prior to the Club's meeting. All are invited.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Last Saturday, the Lansing Club held a Brewtasting for Hospicare, and Lansing Club member Katherine Mapes extended an invitation for all to attend. Hopefully, the event was a success and some of you had a chance to go! It was held at Crossroads Bar & Grille (not clown) in Lansing.

June Losurdo took center stage to remind everyone about that which (should have) needed no reminder: TODAY IS PANCAKE DAY! What’s the old Election Day saying about “early and often?” Vote early, eat pancakes often? Be sure to get your tickets paid up and out into a hungry person’s hands. At Coltivare from 7 to 7.

Dale Flinn shared some stats from the Books of the World packing days and thanked everyone who volunteered. On Sunday, 10/27, 6,101 books packed into 63 boxes in just two hours — about 2 minutes per box! Jeff True was the big winner with 270 books in one box. (I heard that Jeff kept out “The Power of Positive Packing” until the end.) Tuesday, 10/29, 57 boxes and 2,163 books were packed. An interesting fact that Dale shared, was that after every Friends of the Library Booksale, all the books are given away or recycled and that the next sale starts clean with ALL new books!

Members signed a Thinking of You card for George Schneider, who is not well. We want you back in good health soon, George!

The Sunrise Club collects magazines for CMC’s waiting rooms, but they can only accept issues that are less than eight weeks old. It is a requirement of CMC’s accreditation. So please bring those you would normally read and toss, not the ones piled up in the corner of your den. Many thanks!

Happy Dollars were given in appreciation of Dale Flinn and all he does for the Club, a 24-hour kettle shift by Stacy McNeil from the Salvation Army coming up at WalMart, a happy table, Linda Pasto surviving an overnight adventure at Camp Comstock, Jack Roscoe being back from San Diego, a great trip to Budapest and Prague, and to Angela Sullivan for doing great work.

For Stephen Nunley being at the meeting, visiting family in Austin, granddaughter inducted into the National Honor Society, polio prevention, brewtasting in Lansing, Lansing Rotary being back in the student exchange business, youth exchange program posters, early voting, Cass Park enclosure event coverage, History Center murder mysteries exhibit, PRI bee exhibit in Ithaca Times, visit to Tacoma Rotary Club, and 30 children at the YMCA after school program learning to wash their hands properly.

Do you know someone who would host an exchange student? The Youth Exchange Committee is always looking for good host families. Please let Marshall McCormick (marshall@fingerlakeswm.com) or Linda Brisson (ithacarotaryYEO@gmail.com) know if you have any suggestions.

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Larry Robinson gave a presentation on the finances of our Club and gave special thanks to Club Treasurer Jay O’Leary, and Club Secretary Joanne Lamoreaux for getting information to him on a tight deadline.

Clearly stated he was describing everything, not explaining it, Larry included stats from the number of members (176), to attendance at meetings, years in Rotary, expenses and income in the past few years, and calendar of asks throughout the year. (And no pie charts!) For all the graphs see Larry’s presentation here.
