December 13, 2017 President June Losurdo opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, and then turned the show over to Jeff True for his Thought for The Day. Jeff shared a familiar voice with the group in motivational speaker Tom Krause. Jeff read, Why Today Matters? “Today is not just any ordinary day. Today is a day that matters. Today you will have the choice to make a difference in your life and those around you. Today you will have the choice to smile rather than frown, be grateful rather than selfish, lift up rather than put down, accept rather than reject and love rather than hate. Today you will have the choice of seeking hope for the future or remain in the hopelessness of the past. Today you have the choice to laugh or cry. Both will make you feel better. Today you will have the undivided attention of the King of the Universe. At that time you can ask Him anything you want. You can ask for help, plead for a friend or just enjoy His present. It all depends on you. Whichever you choose, today matters. Make the choice to make it a day worth living. And don’t forget, tomorrow is another day.” (©2015 Tom Krause) Brad Carruth introduced guests, and at the close of the meeting Ron Provus was given the honor of putting the mallet to the bell.
Believe it or not, July 1, 2018 is just around the corner, and Present Past President Dale Johnson has wasted no time in getting out the sunscreen, sharpening the lawn mower, ironing his t-shirts, and finalizing the cabinet of officers and Board members for the next Rotary year. Acting in his capacity as Nominating Chair, Dale presented the Slate of Nominees for a vote: - President: Mary Berens
- President-Elect: Frank Towner
- Immediate Past President: June Losurdo
- Vice President: Geoff Dunn
- Treasurer: Jay O’Leary
- Secretary: Joanne Lamoureux
- At Large: Dan Weed and Dennis Gray
Leaving nothing to chance, Dale then put forth a Motion to accept the slate, which was accepted. A vote was taken by all members present, and the motion passed. Congratulations to the newbies, Geoff, Jay, Dennis, and Dan!
And many thanks to outgoing Treasurer Bill Hawley, and at-large member Bez Thomas for their dedicated service to our Club.
Our annual Salvation Army bell ringing post was fulfilled this past Friday and Saturday at the Triphammer Tops, and Larry Robinson sends his thanks and gratitude to those Rotarians who participated: Jeff Bricker, Walt (and Jeannie) Cottrell, Mary-Lynn Cummings, Bob Gravani, JoEllen Hedlund, Loralyn Light (and David Parks), Paul Martin, Harlin McEwen, Rob Mackenzie, Mel Richards, Larry (and Marcie) Robinson, George (and Bobbie) Schneider, Roger Sibley, Larry (and Ali) Thayer, Frank Towner, Jeff True, and Brian (and Chris) Wilbur. Ron Provus introduced our newest member, Lane Simon. With 25 years in food service and hospitality operations, Lane was a valuable asset as assistant chef for our Election Pancake Day! Lane is now an agent with Warren Real Estate. Welcome Lane!
The Dozen Dinner Draw fundraiser is building steam with a number of amazing restaurant sponsors already on board.
Here is how it works: Tickets are $50 each, and just 200 will be sold. A drawing will be held on February 14, 2018, with five prizes awarded to the winning ticket holders. First prize is a package of a Dozen Dinners valued at $100 each (total value for the first prize, $1,200). Second prize is a pack of six gift cards for lunch or dinner, each for $50. There will be two third prize winners, each receiving three $50 restaurant gift cards. And finally, one bonus prize will be awarded: a $100 gift certificate to August Moon Spa at La Tourelle.
Here is what it’s for: All proceeds — $10,000 — will go to water and sanitation disaster recovery for Puerto Rico. Easily a worthwhile $50 donation. Please spread the word!
Heidi Goldstein introduced Michael Barakiva, the first (and current) full time, in-residence Artistic Director for the Hangar Theatre.
Michael is an Armenian /Israeli-American theater director who has worked in New York and across the country developing new plays and staging classics. He is a graduate of Vassar College and Juilliard School, where he studied as an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow in Directing.
The Hangar is presenting Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, in a new adaptation by playwright and longtime Ithaca resident, Aoise Stratford. In response to the regional theatre movement, this Dickens adaptation is Ithaca in nature. Michael hopes it will establish a permanent annual event and tourism asset.
As the Artistic Director for this new Ithaca adaptation, Michael showed us how he transformed stage and set space into a lush and evocative metaphor. For instance, in the design of a Victorian-era, London-based set he superimposed a skeleton clock image onto the set design along with other period structures, making it into the “most expensive and luxurious set that the Hangar Theatre has ever seen.”
Performances are December 10–24, with both evening and matinee show times scheduled. For more information, visit HangarTheatre.org.
