WELCOME & TRADITIONS

There have been a lot of “the most consequential in (pick your timeline)” events past, present, and coming in 2020, the most recent of which was Friday night when news spread that Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Cornell ’54, had died. I have read, and listened to multiple podcasts with and about “Ruthie,” as classmates called her, and she was, from start to finish, a remarkable woman. I am proud to live in the place where she lived and studied.

You can find articles, TV shows, radio stories, and podcasts about “RBG” at any of a thousand turns, but I’ll give just two here. First, one that turned up on my Google newsfeed Monday morning, is a letter from Cornell President Martha Pollack. It was published in both the Cornell Daily Sun, and in the Cornell Chronicle. Here is a link to the latter, tagged with this headline: “Pollack: Ginsburg’s ‘unwavering pursuit of equity’ embodied the Cornell ideal.”

The other is an editorial from Monday’s Daily Sun, the second paragraph of which jumped out and wrapped itself around me, finding a home with my values.

One of the Justice’s greatest qualities was her ability not just to open doors for herself, but to leave them open for those after her. There are many spaces of government, of society, of Cornell and of our own lives where doors remain shut. The one choice we all have is to pry those doors open, and honor her by holding them for others to pass through.

The motto of my K-12 school in Philadelphia, founded in 1845, is “Behold I have set before thee an open door.” The Sun’s Opinion Department, inspired by RBG, has brought that ideal fully and soulfully into the 21st century.

Heidi Goldstein has a new bell, which she employed to full effect to get last week’s meeting underway. President Geoff Dunn took the cue, welcomed everyone, and assigned four Rotarians to recite the Four-Way Test, including Dominick Recckio, Joanne Lamoureux, Jean McPheeters, and Dale Johnson.

Frank Towner quoted a former YMCA president for his Thought for The Day: “Everyone you know or meet has some struggle or hardship they are dealing with, that you know nothing about … BE KIND!” And Frank read the following, by Denis Waitley:

Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.

Guests were introduced, including Susan Tabrizi, Coordinator of the Lansing Lunchbox program. Susan thanked Rotary for all its support, by way of tapping the program as the recipient of this month’s DoGoodery raffle proceeds. Visiting Rotarian David Traver, President of the Dryden Rotary Club, filled us in on what the Dryden Rotarians have been up to recently. Included in David’s report was a feature in Tompkins Weekly, an event with Finger Lakes Reuse, a BBQ this past Saturday, and a Food Run at Clarks coming up in October.

The DoGoodery raffle prize winner was Ron Provus, whose number was picked from among the 91 tickets sold.

And speaking of DoGoodery, a sort of meta-Goodery that needs doing is to donate prizes for future raffles. Got any Gooderies in your closets?

ANNOUNCEMENTS

There is a free webinar series about racism in America – you can register at https://as.cornell.edu/racism-in-america. “Policing and Incarceration” was held last week, but there are a lot of references listed on the page. The next webinar is in November. This would be a good opportunity to continue the conversation in our Club.

The Pancake Day event is being reimagined as a pancakes to go event. Details are being worked out, and a report will be coming soon.

Happy Dollars! There were happy dollars for Susan Trabizi, a successful youth exchange information session, Ride Around the Lake, a husband’s new job, chicken BBQ in Dryden, Loaves and Fishes Empty Bowls to Go event on October 10th (loaves.org - $75 per ticket), Baldwinsville Rotary Club visit, flowers left on the porch, Edible Arrangements, third pacemaker, those recognized at the Chamber Annual meeting event. A total $154 was raised from ten happy Rotarians!

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

Melanie Little, Director of Education and Youth Services at the Mental Health Association in Tompkins County, presented on the dual role of September as both Recovery Month and Suicide Prevention Month.

Mental illness concerns were prevalent prior to COVID-19, and the MHATC’s self screening tool shows there is an increase in the prevalence and severity of mental health disorders. The pandemic is clearly having a negative effect on mental health. Risk factors include ongoing stress, anxiety, trauma, and social isolation, and are increasing during the pandemic.

MHATC offers peer support, and focuses on key recovery concepts based on the Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) — hope, personal responsibility, education to support wellness and recovery, self advocacy, and support. What does being well being look like to you? A wellness toolbox is available, offering all tools and actions one can take to be well or recover from being unwell. Click here to open Melanie's full slide presentation.
