WELCOME & TRADITIONS

President Frank Towner kicked off the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Jack Roscoe gave thoughts for the day, humorously based on politics as fitting the day after elections:

  • Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect. — Mark Twain
  • Politicians and diapers must be changed often and for the same reason. — Mark Twain
  • It is not what politicians don’t know that bothers me, it’s what they do know that just ain’t so. — Will Rogers
  • A man who knows nothing but thinks he knows everything is ideally suited to a political career. — George Bernard Shaw

It was the beginning of a new month, and that means … birthdays and anniversaries! However, Frank was unable to pull list together after the Halloween night storm had forced the YMCA to close due to water and electrical damage. But, since he was pretty confident that Rotarians knew their own birthday, he asked all those in that special group to stand as the club sang. There was special applause for Jim Showacre who is 93 this month!

Frank promised to recognize anniversaries at tomorrow’s meeting. (Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays this President from his appointed list … mostly.)

Rotarians introduced their visitors, and Frost Travis introduced a fellow Rotarian from Olympia, Washington, and presented Frank with a banner from that club.

Dennis Gray won the red ticket raffle, a book about Rotary donated by Jeff True, and a Finger Lakes t-shirt.

Youth Exchange Committee meets tomorrow (2nd Wed.) at Coltivare, 11:00 a.m., prior to the Club's meeting. All are invited.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The flat top griddles were barely cool in the Coltivare kitchen when Geoff Dunn and President Frank gave their overview of our 46th annual Pancake Day, which had wrapped up just 17 hours earlier. By all accounts, it was a great success; we served 732 people. There are way too many people for Frank and Geoff to thank in one breath, but they shouted out special kudos to Coltivare for hosting the event. (Coltivare is in the House!) June Losurdo presented Ring Master Geoff with some cooling foot spray to offset the lingering effects of the previous day. Bravo and many thanks to all who helped pull off this momentous event!

Siu Ling followed the dynamic duo, thanking all those who placed ads on the Pancake Day placements.

Dennis Gray gave a plug for Dozen Dinner Draw 2020. Tickets are on sale now until February for $50.

Linda Pasto reminded Rotarians that the next Days for Girls production event is this coming Friday and Saturday, November 15 & 16. This awesome project produces washable menstrual kits for girls in developing countries so they can go to school every day, and become productive beyond the reach of the stigma of normal menstruation. There’s a lot of sewing that goes on, but there is also a lot of moving fabric and packing product, so you don’t need to know anything about sewing to join in. Hours are 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. both days. Check in with Linda for details.

Richard Kops announced that Share The Warmth is underway with the ubiquitous red boxes having been set out around the county this past weekend. Sign up sheets are ready to schedule for collecting, sorting, delivering, and other volunteer shifts from Nov. 25–Dec. 13. Check your calendars and find a time when you can be part of this important annual program. Bring your kids and other family members, too. This is a real group activity!

Richard further urged Rotarians to search through their closets for those coats, mittens, scarves, hats, etc. that haven’t been worn in a few years so are ripe for donating. What looks tired to you will be warm and wonderful for one of our neighbors!

Heidi Goldstein, Steve Johnson, and Ivy Stevens-Gupta presented Brad Carruth with his Paul Harris Fellow Plus-One pin. Steve had a ball roasting Brad about being a meticulous neatnik before handing over the coveted pin. Congratulations and thanks for all you do, Brad!

President Frank collected Happy Dollars: The Lake Erie classic Bills vs. Browns game this past weekend (Browns took it 19-16), Pancake Day and Coltivare, a guitar for a grandson, Share The Warmth, 30 years since the Berlin Wall came down, vacation to Barbados, and much more. There is starting to be some competition between tables about 100% giving. Who will lead the way next week? Bring your cash dollars!

LAST WEEK’S PROGRAM

The program was Rotary Trivia led by Melissa Coville and Katrina Van Atta. Tables were the teams, answering 15 questions about all things Rotary. Teams Table 2 and Table 9 tied for the win!
