October 11, 2017 It was another packed house at Coltivare, with many guests present for the Community Grants Awards presentation. President June started things off with the fine Rotary tradition of the Four-Way Test, and making note of the banner with the text so the tall guests could help out. Steven Nunley’s Thought for The Day was two parts: - One small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day
- Your value does not decrease based on someone’s inability to see your worth
Brad Carruth introduced all of the visitors, and two visiting Rotarians: Pat Vaughan (former Ithaca Rotarian, who joined in 1987), now a member of the Port Townsend, WA Noon Rotary Club and Michiko Mae, a visiting scholar at Cornell and member of the Dusseldorf-Schlossturin Rotary Club, Dusseldorf, Germany. Brad also read the October Club Anniversaries, asking all those present to, “stand and remain standing …,” as is our tradition. As it happened, none were present, perhaps a first!
Important Club scheduling notes: Tomorrow’s meeting (10/18) is at Coltivare, however next week, October 25, the meeting is at the Country Club. Also, the October board meeting is next Tuesday, the 24th, a week earlier than the usual last Tuesday date, which this year is Halloween.
Wizarding Weekend — Oct. 28 & 29 — is followed closely by the Election Day Pancake Day, Nov. 7. Both need scores of volunteers. (Well, maybe “scores” is a bit of a stretch. How about “yards”? Yards of volunteers.)
For Wizarding Weekend’s Grilled Cheese Extravaganza you can sign up the old fashioned way by signing a sheet of paper at the meeting, OR you can go online and sign up from your smart phone! Here is how you get there: Click here to open the Wizarding Weekend event page, then click the “Online Registration” button on the left side of the page. That should take you to the volunteer registration page.
For Pancake Day, as of now, we’re sticky with tradition, and signing up on the big boards at the Wednesday meetings.
President June announced that an anonymous donor has made Mike Billings a Paul Harris Fellow Plus-one. Mike has been in the hospital and as of now is receiving hospice care at home. Visitors are very much welcome.
John Barradas marshaled his forces for highway cleanup this past Saturday. The orange bags you saw along the Route 13 shoulder yesterday and today? Yep, that was Rotarians At Work!
Did you miss LAFF on the Saturday before last? All reports are that it was a real winner! Maybe the best yet! Jack Roscoe thanked the entire LAFF team for their work (which began last May!) The Rotary team included: Ron Provus, Brett Bossard, Rich Higgins, Dave Martin, Ted Schiele, Jay O’Leary, Loretta Goss, Dale Flinn, Brad Carruth, JoEllen Hedlund, Bill Hawley, Joe Giordano, and Joanne Lamoureux.
The One Rotary Summit is this coming Saturday, Oct. 21. The conference at the Endicott Visitor Center is free to attend. Registration and networking start at 8:30 a.m., the program runs from 9:00 till 12:30 p.m. A continental breakfast and early lunch will be provided. Full info and registration on the District web site.
The District 7170 Banquet is November 4 at The McKinley in Endicott. This year's speaker, Dr. 'Bowtie' Todd Jenkins, will bring his energy and enthusiasm for Rotary to our banquet. To register, click here. (A note about registration. You must click Pay By Check to complete your registration. Credit card payments are possible, and you will get a link to the payment page after clicking Pay By Check.)
The deal that George Gull made, make a donation to the Rotary Foundation and get two stunning eclipse photos, is still on! Check with June to sign up.
National Philanthropy Day is November 17, and two fellow Rotarians will be honored: Mary Berens and Mary Grainger. The luncheon will be held at Emerson Suites at IC, and it would be great to have at least one table full of Rotarians! To register, please click here for the e-invite from the AFP site.
Happy Dollars There was time after the week’s program to collect some Happy Dollars. When someone is given a microphone, you never quite know what’s going to happen. Today, Larry Robinson shared a great quote that brought the house down: “Women who carry a little extra weight tend to live longer than… (wait for it) … the men who mention it.”
Priceless one liners aside, Rotarians were organically happy for the weather, Puerto Rico relief, community grants, BFTW, best friends, loving their job, LAFF, and the Greater Ithaca Art Trail, to name a few.
President June selected George Snyder to come up and ring the bell to close out the meeting. Before that however, George drew Rob Mackenzie’s red ticket. Rob went for the yellow box, and won CU football tickets.

After the grant awardees were introduced, Heidi Goldstein gave a brief presentation in honor of Global Hand Washing Day, which was yesterday, October 16. Several years ago, she and Joe Cassaniti developed a hand washing program for preschool children ages 3–5, and took it on the road. Now, they are seeking new volunteers to go into the schools to spread the word to kids: “germs are not for sharing.” Please contact Heidi for more info.
