Our progress in the fight against polio shows why vaccination is importantIncreasing awareness about the power of vaccines and closing immunization gaps could protect millions of people worldwide from vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio, according to the World Health Organization. World Immunization Week, 24-30 April, is an opportunity to focus on that work, and the robust polio eradication infrastructure built by Rotary and our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) provides a model for it.The GPEI estimates that polio vaccines have saved an estimated 20 million children around the world from paralysis. When Rotary helped launch the GPEI in 1988, the disease paralyzed more than 1,000 people worldwide every day, most of them young children. Since then, Rotary and its partners have reduced the number of polio cases by 99%, and in 2021 there were just six cases of polio caused by the wild poliovirus. Afghanistan and Pakistan are the only two countries where the wild poliovirus remains endemic. Are you a Polio Plus Society member? $100.00 per year. Apr. 30, 2022 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
SAVE THE DATE APRIL 30, 2022 for this year’s Rotary International Day of Service. After a hiatus, for the past two years, this year’s service project is scheduled for Saturday, April 30, 8:30 AM-3:00 PM. The Ranch is located 8 miles from the town of Oracle on Mt Lemmon Road. Most, if not all of the work projects will be outdoors at this beautiful Southern Arizona facility. The work performed is a general cleaning up of the outdoor areas, painting, trimming, planting, and general cleanup around the cabins. This is a great opportunity to bring friends and family and introduce them to the spirit of Rotary. According to this year’s Rotary International President Shekhar Mehta, “bring together volunteers from inside and outside Rotary to celebrate and showcase the spirit of Rotary in your community”.

David Sweet is the author of “Three Seconds in Munich: The Controversial 1972 Olympic Basketball Final”For those of you as old as I am, the US had never lost an Olympic Basketball championship up until that time. The US appeared to win the game in the final seconds not once, but twice. Each time, the ending was ordered to be replayed, until the Soviets “won” on the third attempt.Due to the Cold War geopolitical situation, the result transcended sports and was a major world news item. And given today’s interest in Russian “special military actions,” it remains of interest today.
