President Jim Ruble called the meeting to order at 12:29, welcoming everyone to today’s meeting.

Dennis Lower made us all laugh with a couple of good jokes, and then Gary Pehrson had us all stand and lead us in singing “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”

President Ruble spoke to the club about Bob Auflick ad how he appreciated the card that was sent to him.

Mike Ward’s grandson Dylan Stupak invited everyone to his Eagle Court on August 20 at 2:00pm.

 

Steve Loftin nominated all of the members who helped pack food at the Food Bank of the Rockies last week.

Mandy George nominated Lisa Hubbard for stepping up to help get prizes for the upcoming Duck Derby.

Bill DeGraeve nominated Chad Nelson for stopping to pick up blown over road closure signs in the street.

Bill Schilling nominated the Griffith’s and the Boatright’s for opening their new restaurant Racca’s.

Grant Stumbough nominated Angela Emery for the article in the paper about her and the Parkway Trust.

 

 

1. Bill Schilling spoke about Rotary’s legacy of Crossroads Park and now Rotary Park and how important it is to sell Duck Derby tickets to support projects like that.

2. Brian Deurloo spoke about the Duck Derby that coming Saturday.  He reviewed the schedule and asked for volunteers for several of the areas.    

3. Richard Schwahn spoke about his daughter, Maddie, going to the Netherlands and how well she was doing there.  He spoke about the two exchange students that would be arriving that Wednesday at 4:30 pm at the airport.  He reminded the club that there is still a need for two more host families for Tobby.      

 

 

Richard Schwhn introduced our speaker today, Dr. Jim Logan, Wyoming’s State Veterinarian. Dr. Logan spoke to the club about Brucellosis.  He began by saying that Brucellosis is a bacterial disease with many subtypes, going on to explain the 6 types of the disease.  Brucellosis is caused by a bacteria shed from females at the time of birthing.  The disease is spread through the ingestion or inhalation of the birthing material by other animals in the herd.  Brucellosis is a huge problem on the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA) which includes Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.  It was originally brought in with cattle then it spread to the bison in the area and finally to the elk.  The elk are still continuing to harbor the disease. The type of Brucellosis that is common in the GYA causes late term abortion in the animals.  Dr. Logan stated that veterinarians are required to report all cases of Brucellosis to the State and Federal regulatory officials.  He reviewed the rules of the Wyoming Livestock Board concerning Brucellosis which require testing, vaccination, identification and quarantines.  If a case of Brucellosis is discovered in a herd, the infected herd and the adjacent herds need to be quarantined.  The adjacent herds can be released from quarantine if they can produce one negative test, however, the infected herd must produce three consecutive negative tests to be released from quarantine.    Dr. Logan stated that Brucellosis is not a food safety issue.  He then reviewed the case history of the disease.

Question: Why are cattle not vaccinated for the disease? Answer: They are, the vaccination is only 60-70% effective.

Question: How much do the vaccinations cost?  Answer: $3.00 - $5.00 per head.
