Meeting Summary

President John Griffith called the meeting to order promptly at 12:30 pm, with the ring of the bell and welcomed everyone to today’s meeting.

Fred Feth and Pinky Ellis were our greeters today and Fred introduced the members who brought guests:

Kevin Murphy nominated the DeGraves, Devores and Boatrights for hosting Fran last year.
Kristin Galles nominated Jim Anderson for RYLA driving (in class!).
Lisa Scroggins nominated Lori Klatt for taking care of last week’s meeting set-up.
Liz Becher nominated Caryn Dowell for walking in the parade with the 2020 census mascot, Allie Jo (Lisa Scroggins’ daughter) for wearing the mascot costume in the parade, and Richard Schwahn for helping with all of the animals confiscated last week.
Miamie Sleep nominated Tim Havasi, Chastidy Fox and Mike (??) for helping her hand out duck derby tickets to members that she didn’t know.
Susan Griffith nominated Mike Sullivan for moderating the media last week.
Chastidy Fox nominated Mike Stepp for his Business After Hours event last week.
Announcements:
Miamie Sleep and Chastidy Fox spoke about Duck Derby. Please volunteer for working the Bear Trap booth to sell tickets. Miamie stated that there’s still about 50 packets of tickets to hand-out as some members don’t regularly attend meetings. Deb Theriault suggested that the tickets be Mailed out immediately. See Miamie if you need additional tickets to sell.
Peaches Lynch reminded us that the Golf Tournament is on Saturday. (Thanks to Bob Tarantola for the prop). They still need volunteers for the tournament! There are a few team slots still available. Volunteer orientation is on Wednesday at 4:00 pm at Three Crowns. Thank you to everyone that volunteered or sponsored.
President John Griffith announced that this year’s Duck Derby project will be Phase 2 of the Crossroads Adventure Playground. The focus will be to create areas for older kids to play.
Membership:
Megan Miller and Erin Helms were welcomed into the club with the presentation of their Red Badges and membership packets. Thank you to their sponsors Liz Becher (Megan) and John Phillips (Erin) for recruiting two wonderful new members.
Program:
Lisa Scroggins introduced Tom Heald from Wyoming Plant Company. Mr. Heald quizzed the group about numerous gardening and yard maintenance inaccuracies. Mr. Heald explained that fertilizer is not plant food but a “performance enhancement drug.” He also spoke about the importance of carbon (organic content/dead plants) in the soil. Wyoming, overall, has a low carbon content (roughly 0.1%) compared to Iowa’s 5%.
Mr. Heald told us to stop bagging our grass, raking our leaves and power raking the yards. He stated that mid-August or September is a good time to spray for weeds. You should transplant in March or April when the soil is cool/cold. Plant grass in cool seasons like September. Aerate your lawn at least once per year anytime. We do not have crabgrass in Casper. Tree roots don’t grow deep, they grow close to the surface and grow up to FIVE TIMES the height of the tree.
President John Griffith concluded the meeting at 1:25 pm letting us know that next week we will be back at the Ramkota next week.
