Today Bermuda has more than 200 persons, up from 64 persons in 2002, with End Stage Renal Disease. The fight with CKD now costs more than 40 million BMD per year for approximately 200 patients. The cost equates to roughly 13,000 BMD per patient per month for hemodialysis. Diabetes and hypertension (HTN) are the two most prominent risk factors which are both manageable to some degree. It is estimated that around 9000 people in Bermuda are living with Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM).

CKD is defined as markers of kidney damage for at least 6 months. Prevention of CKD progression requires early detection, blood pressure control <140/90 mm Hg and diabetes control hemoglobin A1c 7% for patients with diabetes among other factors.
The members of the Hamilton Rotary Club would like to invite you to join our effort to fight this chronic disease in Bermuda by  becoming a sponsoring our third annual 5 K Walk/Run.This  will take place on November 14 th 2020  at 9 A M in  the Botanical Gardens  and virtually from Friday November 13 until Sunday November 15 2020.
Last year our second  5 K Walk /Run was a success and we will have built upon last year’s event to make this year's event more popular and reach more members in the community.
The goal of the event is to promote a healthy lifestyle in the Bermudian community and to raise money to educate, increase the awareness and screen for risk factors of chronic diseases.
Just as we did last year the Walk/Run will be called: Hamilton Rotary Run -Conquering Kidney Disease.
As you may know, kidney disease affects the Bermudian population at a disproportionately high rate and the incidence of End Stage Renal Disease in the Island is staggeringly high.
By organizing this event the Hamilton Rotary Club will contribute towards the increased awareness of Kidney disease amongst the Island population, facilitate screening for HTN, T2DM, Obesity and CKD.
The proceeds of this Walk /Run will go toward our Rotary Project called the Healthy Bermuda Project which was started two years ago .We will continue the campaign of public  education and awareness .This year we are also hoping to contribute directly to persons in need and to make insulin pumps accessible to Bermudians with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus who cannot afford this device costing about 8,000 BMD.

Please help us to make this Walk /Run a success by your contribution towards covering the overhead of the event, sponsoring the Healthy Bermuda Project and even by bringing your office colleagues to participate in the event with you to which they can register through the following link: https://runsignup.com/Race/BM/Paget/HamiltonRotaryClub5KRunWalk
