President Heather's Announcement

All were welcomed to the Christmas get-together, and in particular District Governor Bob Cooper and DG elect Kim Harvey.

District Governor Bob presented Past President Ken Haines with an Annual Giving Banner in recognition of Unley's contribution of $250 per member (second highest of all clubs in D9520) to the Rotary Foundation and thanked the club for its generosity...see Heather, Bob and Ken opposite

It was a convivial night at the Horizon Bar with plentiful sun and finger food. Joy Bangsund's niece joined us all the way from Queensland which was  rather nice and helped lower the average age. The editor avoided listening to any gossip so there are no good tales to be told.......except he noticed that Mavis and Trevor were checking out each other's upper breast bones! To 'cut' a long story short it unfolded that both had had heart surgery performed by the same surgeon and were comparing scars to determine who had received the best stitching......TM was pleased that the doctor had  successfully held both their hearts in his hands.

It was notable that the women took far greater effort to dress for this important occasion but Ken Haines won the best dressed award.......as one would expect... see Ken's socks opposite. Due to solar intrusion the photography suffered and only the women in shade survived.......maybe there is a lesson in all this.

Thanks Jerry for organising this enjoyable occasion......the depleted photographic collection is below.

Rotary News

Our Peru Endeavour...Medical Health Project for Isolated Communities in Cusco

Update from Trevor McGuirk

Over the past few days I have been in contact with the Director of the “DESEA”, Sandra McGirr, on several occasions either by skype or email. DESEA is delivering the Global Grant objectives of the project – to train community health care workers, to install water filters, to conduct health clinics for the children – including dental clinics and to conduct Days for Girls clinics.  It’s all happening and what fantastic work is being done! The photos shows the advanced emergency first aid – don’t you love the severed arm shot of the emergency training. I love the way the children calmly front up for dental treatment – a video might prove me wrong! 163 children were examined/treated at the dental clinic.
Am I proud of what is being achieved – you bet -  and thanks to the Rotary Club of Unley for sponsoring this project along with 11 other clubs.
Trevor

The Tale End

Predictions from the past.......our genius is still to be recognised

.
"I'm just glad it'll be Clark Gable who's falling on his face and not Gary Cooper."
Gary Cooper on his decision not to take the leading role in "Gone With The Wind."

"We don't like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out."
Decca Recording Co. rejecting the Beatles, 1962.

"Heavier-than-air flying machines are impossible."
Lord Kelvin, president, Royal Society, 1895.

"So we went to Atari and said, 'Hey, we've got this amazing thing, even built with some of your parts, and what do you think about funding us? Or we'll give it to you. We just want to do it. Pay our salary, we'll come work for you.' And they said, 'No.' So then we went to Hewlett-Packard, and they said, 'Hey, we don't need you. You haven't got through college yet.'"
Apple Computer Inc. founder Steve Jobs on attempts to get Atari and H-P interested in his and Steve Wozniak's personal computer.

"Professor Goddard does not know the relation between action and reaction and the need to have something better than a vacuum against which to react. He seems to lack the basic knowledge ladled out daily in high schools."
1921 New York Times editorial about Robert Goddard's revolutionary rocket work.

Mistletoe

Checking my luggage onto a budget airline on Christmas eve, I saw hanging mistletoe. Not real mistletoe, but very cheap plastic.

With a considerable degree of irritation and nowhere else to vent it, I said to the female attendant, "Even if I were not married, I would not want to kiss you under such a ghastly mockery of mistletoe."

"Sir, look more closely at where the mistletoe is."

"Ok, I see that it's above the luggage scale, which is the place you'd have to step forward for a kiss."

"That's not why it's there."

"Ok, I give up. Why is it there?"

"It's there so you can kiss your luggage goodbye."
