Guest Speaker: Clare Pearson - Issues of human trafficking

Chairman Aine Stirling introduced Clare who is CEO of Project Futures and hails from Sydney. Clare is a trained psychologist in adolescent welfare. She has a wealth of experience at an executive level in the not for profit sector and has filled positions both locally and internationally throughout her career. She joined Project Futures in 2017 and is committed to projects of purpose to protect children at risk. Clare to the left and Aine to the right....look much like sisters?

Project Futures is a Not For Profit organisation and is all about protecting children from sex exploitation and slavery (and giving women hope) in Cambodia and Australia. To achieve greater understanding as to the magnitude of the problem, she conducts 10 day tours to Cambodia for potential sponsors. A video was shown of Nora who had been rescued as a child from severe family abuse and through PF nurturing had achieved tertiary graduation....and is now helping others through PF.  PF has set its sights on the Asia-Pacific region and has the following goals:
  • Prevention through education
  • Provision of support services to rehabilitate and reintegrate those who have been abused
  • Empowerment through employment and advocacy.

In 2009 their first centre was established in Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh, and over the 10 years 7000 children have been recovered. Some children are being sold off for as little as 10 kilos of rice. Their partner organisation in Cambodia is AFESIP which has itself a record of saving 15,000 children over the last 20 years. Services provided through this centre include:
  • 120 microfinance loans for women to create enterprise and reduce the need to sell off their children
  • 100,000 condoms to women being trafficked
  • 78,000 meals for those at risk
  • 200 bicycles
  • 300 surgical operations to repair damaged bodies
  • 5 girls being supported through tertiary education
In Sydney a safe house has been established in partnership with the Salvos, focusing on relief of child exploitation. Outreach is provided to those in difficulty through medical treatment, accommodation, therapy, education and empowerment. It is estimated that 4,300 children are trafficked here each year, and far too many 14-18 year girls are being forced into unwanted marriages. Across the world there are 46 million people being trafficked and 2 million kids being sold off.

Clare is seeking help for her 3 priority projects which include refurbishment of the medical and psychological centre ($20K), education and learning centre ($26K), and provision of playground and computer services ($15K).

President Heather was pleased to announce a donation of $2000 for PF and Clare responded with thanks......this will be matched $1 for $1 by a sponsor.

Clare was thanked by acclamation.

Spots....another outbreak of measles

Ken Haines reported a healthy profit of $1047+ from the Bunnings BBQ on Monday and $223+ for the Mitre10 BBQ last Saturday.

Trevor McGuirk announced he was back from Peru.....as if we did not know.....and presented President Heather with  a RC Cusco banner.....their Machu Pichu is a tad more impressive than our Rotunda.

Jerry Casburn inspired undying devotion and managed to fill most of the vacancies for the Birthing Kit display at Unley Shopping Centre 24 - 26 May......members can still check the roster to shore up support when only one person is on duty.
There is an invitation to attend a Bunnings thank-you on June 21....see advert below Salvos

Reno Elms for the Red Shield Appeal asked for more doorknocking help over this coming weekend and for donations.......our club matches member donations $1 for $1.

Rachel Harding asked for more help for the Mitre 10 sausage sizzle......last Saturday was difficult.

Wendy Andrews is holding a Community Service committee meeting next Tuesday at 5.45pm to discuss the plight of families caring for a member with brain injuries and White Ribbon.

The Finale

David Middleton again won the atrocious squares..............just born lucky. Stephen the elder was happy with the hot gospeller at the Royal Wedding. Jerry was also happy with his fishing week-end at Robe........but did not catch any fish?

President Heather closed the meeting in a timely fashion and thanked guest speaker Clare for flying over from Sydney for our meeting.

PLEASE SUPPORT THE SALVOS RED SHIELD APPEAL THIS COMING WEEKEND BY STROLLING THE BEATIFUL SUBURBS OF UNLEY AND/OR WITH DONATIONS

Rotary News

Literacy center dedicated to Pakistan Rotarian

By Michelle Tanner, past president Rotary Club of Matamata, New Zealand

Michelle Tanner’s daughter, Alice, right, reads with some of the students during the opening of the literacy center.

While I was in Lahore, Rotarian Khalid Haider invited me to his home city of Jhang, three hours west of Lahore. There he took me to visit the Rotary Education Center Dar-ul-Ehsan, established in 2002 and funded by his Rotary club, Jhang Saddar. I was impressed at the efforts of the local Rotarians, and appalled that, in the 21st century children were educated in these conditions. They wrote on slates! There were hardly any books, almost no furniture, in fact virtually nothing. Just a willingness on the part of the children to learn and of the teachers to teach. The Rotarians were doing all they could but they needed help.

I returned to New Zealand to seek the support of my fellow Rotarians. In July 2016, when I became president, this was our international project, supported by a district grant. I emailed the news to Khalid who went into action rallying support from other overseas Rotarians who had visited and pledged support and setting up a Facebook page. Building work commenced in January 2017 and was completed in months.

Sadly, Khalid died just weeks before the opening ceremony but he saw the work completed and we dedicated the development to him. The inauguration of the “Rtn. Mian Khalid Haider Block, Rotary Literacy Centre” was a day that I will remember forever. The transformation was stunning. Classrooms renovated and furnished; new classrooms built; and computers, tables, chairs, blackboard, and books installed. In addition, our new Interact club’s first project, a book drive, provided additional books for the pupils. But it was the children that made the day. They glowed with excitement and anticipation. I look forward to following their progress.

The Tale End

A homeless guy is traveling down a country lane, tired and hungry he comes across a Pub called the "George and the Dragon." Although it's late and the Pub is closed he knocks on the door. The innkeeper's wife sticks her head out of a window. "Could I have some food?" he asks. The woman glances at his shabby clothes and obviously poor condition and sternly says, "No!" "Any chance of a pint of ale then?" "No!" she says again. "Could I at least sleep in your barn?" "No!" By this time, she was shouting. The down-and-out says, "OK Then Might I please...?" "What now?" the woman shouts impatiently. "Might I please have a word with George?

Is there far tooo much emphasis placed on dieting?
