President Heather's Announcements

Speechless

Guest Speaker: Helen Glanville - Prisoner's Kids: The invisible Victims of Crime

Helen Glanville is Chief Executive of Second Chances SA. Like Rotary, Second Chances is about “Making a Difference”. Helen has a passion for prison reform and to raise awareness about the plight of children of prisoners; they are the invisible victims of crime.

Of some note is the fact that Helen is a former Rotary Youth Exchange student who was the first to go to Indonesia.

Helen has a background in nursing, local government and defence PR, and holds a Master of Business Administration. She has over 20 years’ experience working in prison advocacy including 9 years as Executive Director of Prison Fellowship in SA. Together with her husband they have built a successful organisation that has 125 volunteers and 8 paid staff. They received a gold award in the community-led category of the 2017 Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards.

There are around 600 children on their register. These children do not have positive role models and are not taught respect, honesty, manners or a work ethic in the home. 9 – 10  mentoring camps are run each year over 48 hours, usually Friday to Sunday. The children are picked up from and delivered back to their home. There are separate camps for different age groups and gender with about 20 children and 10 Leaders per camp at a cost of $6,000 to $7,000. The camps aim to give the children something the parent can’t. Some of the activities are surfing, ab abseiling, BMX bike riding, caving, archery and kayaking.
Second Chances also provides birthday and Christmas presents for the children some of whom have never received a present before. They also provide them with new school uniforms and shoes.
They currently receive funding from Council grants, Cops for Kids, Sisters of Mercy and Mary Mackillop.

Helen was warmly applauded for her contribution.

My thanks to scribe Heather......there could be a spot for her as bulletin editor when her year as President finishes.

Rotary News

Trevor McGuirk has sent this letter from Chile......there is an underlying threat/promise that he will never read my bulletin again if this masterpiece  it is not published.

Trev’s Travel Trivia.........A letter from Cusco, Peru.

The flight from Adelaide to Melbourne was, as you would expect routine. At check I was given boarding passes for all four flights. Adelaide/Melbourne, Melbourne/Santiago – wait a minute that’s not the seat I was allocated! “Sorry sir, no other seat available” I was told. I protested, “I have paid additional money to be in Seat 14J for extra leg room”. No negotiation, sort it out in Melbourne, I was told.

From there on things were not quite normal. On arrival at the check in at the LATAM counter I showed both itinerary and ticket with seat allocation, “sorry plane is full, you’re have seat 33L”, not even the same one given in Adelaide. 33L is to the rear of the plane – nearly on the rear wing and a window seat. Protesting made no difference, “you will be refunded”. At the waiting lounge we were told boarding was delayed for20mins. Three hours later we boarded.

The consequence, of course, my connection for Santiago/Lima was not going to happen. But worse was to transpire. Nearly 14 hours couped up by a window did not help my sanity. Arrived Santiago, now the real games started. Waited 4 hours in a line of with over 60% of passengers all looking for flights to destinations all over South America, many like me, had more than one flight ahead of them. I could say more but, like the two LATAM attendants, you have already lost interest!! But just to finish, I receive two boarding passes, Yippee!!! Santiago/Lima at 4.45am and Lima/Cusco at 8.00am. On arrival Lima, proceed to immigration, collect case (at least that had arrived) raced to get plane to Cusco, and you guessed it, the gate was closed. Back to check in for another flight to Cusco at 9am. Little sleep in between all this and as if LATAM did not know of the 3-hour delay. Welcome to South America. The return journey will be a breeze….hmmm not sure about that.

The Tale End

This will test your sensibility.......the sort of humour that does well after too many beers/whiskies/gin and tonics. If you are not in this state of inebriation......just pretend and enjoy the moment.

A teddy bear is working on a building site.

He goes for a tea break and when he returns he notices his pick has been stolen.

The bear is angry and reports the theft to the foreman.

The foreman grins at the bear and says "Oh, I forgot to tell you, today's the day the teddy bears have their pick nicked."

Murphy says to Mick, "What ya talkin into an envelope for?"

Mick replies, "I'm sending a voicemail ya thick sod!"

I just got back from my mate's funeral.

He died after being hit on the head with a tennis ball.
It was a lovely service.

When 19 Irishmen go to the cinema, the ticket lady asks, "Why so many of you?"

Mick replies, "The film said 18 or over."

An Asian fellow has moved in next door.

He has travelled the world, swum with sharks, wrestled bears and climbed the highest mountain.

It came as no surprise to learn his name was Bindair Dundat.

My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30am this morning, can you believe that, 2:30am?!

Luckily for him I was still up playing my Bagpipes.

When I was in the pub I heard a couple of plonkers saying that they wouldn't feel safe on an aircraft if they knew the pilot was a woman. What a pair of sexists.

I mean, it's not as if she'd have to reverse the bloody thing!
