This week we are going to develop our normal meeting format. Rotary is all about action, about doing things, about making a difference in our world. Sometimes, as Rotarians, we do this as a group with club activities and projects, while at other times we expand our efforts into larger District initiatives, as well as international community development work. A large part of what we as Rotarians do is also as individuals in our contributions to our vocations and local communities. Tonight, President Trevor is inviting you to a 'mystery night' where some of you will have the opportunity to speak about how you are a Rotarian in Action. This will be a night not to be missed and will be a great night to ask prospective members to come along to learn more about Rotary.

Tonight we will hear from Riki Cooke from Treasure Boxes: Giving Goods to Kids in Need. When poverty, homelessness and domestic violence create an uncertain, sometimes dangerous home environment, many South Australian families struggle to provide their kids with the essentials of life; bedding, clothes, toys, even regular meals. From this troubling reality, Treasure Boxes came to be – a team of caring, like-minded people, dedicated to preventing hardship and trauma by providing kids in need with critical items many of us take for granted. Treasure Boxes arranges the donation, collection and delivery of those childhood essentials, including cots, prams, highchairs and clothes.

They are popping up everywhere... and they are saving lives. When someone has a heart attack it is usually unexpectedly and suddenly. A defibrillator can be the difference between life and death. Within our local community at large, and now within our own Thrift Shop, can be found automated defibrillators... but you need to know what to expect. Tonight Graham is going to show us why we should not be afraid and teach us how to use these machines. Afterwards, Rajat is going to give us a rundown on the strategies we are being encouraged to employ to promote and enhance our public image as a Rotary Club.

Tonight's meeting we will be having a club consultation with a particular focus on continuing our discussion in relation to the future of the thrift shop. Members are strongly encouraged attending as the shrift shop represents our principal fundraising event. We will break up into small groups so that as many perspectives can be gained. These will then be presented to the new Board for consideration. The context for our discussion is first, that the Thrift Shop, and its volunteers, is largely managed by one person, Pam, and secondly, the lease for the property will be up for renewal and renegotiation in a few weeks' time. Input by members will be considered by the incoming Board shortly, as the lease for the property is up for renewal and renegotiation in a few weeks' time. |
