Piatti's Lunch Meeting August 15, 2023

Week #7 - President, Richard Goore!
(G'day Governor!)
The Prez called the meeting to order by ringing the bell at 12:01.  He observed that we had a very good turnout.  Big Al remarked that the Prez really didn't have to pay the members $20 each to turn out for the Governor... another member inquired "You only got $20?"  The Prez then asked Emily Ballus to lead the pledge and Assistant Governor, John Price to provide the invocation.  Both rose to the occasion and John did an exemplary job with the invocation, especially considering he was given short notice... heck he did a great job, even if he had been warned a day in advance.

Introduction of Visiting Rotarians and Guests

Sidney Smith, District Governor

The Prez asked Les Gudger to introduce the guests at his table.  Les then delegated the introductions to the guests themselves telling them to "Stand up and introduce yourselves."  It was at this point that the Prez stepped in and took over... introducing them as pictured here.

Maria Mengotti, Executive Secretary

John Price, Assitant District Governor

Audrey Turner, Daughter of
District Governor Elect, Steve Turner

Steve Turner asked Audrey to stand up so he could properly embarrass her.  Steve proceeded to explain to the club that Audrey first came to a meeting when she was two.  She is starting 8th grade on Wednesday.  She is doing an amazing job at volleyball and is now going to a dance with boys.  She is going to be at school for the next few months and that will limit her visits to the club meetings.

Bell Ringers
                            Happy Bucks
                                                                                                                              Sad Bucks

Chris Lewis, Bell Ringer

Chris rang the Bell in honor of getting his first Rotary Job, updating the Bell Ringer Board so... he felt he should be on it.

Big Al Frumkin, Happy Bucks

Big Al was happy to report that he survived attending the "Ogden Family Reunion" with his Honey, Lisa Ogden.  (It must be very confusing for Al to have two honey's both named Lisa... and very mature of Lisa Keller to allow him that privilege!) Al shared that he had a great time with the extended family and really like the one gal that thought he was 65 years old.  Al then transitioned from the reunion to the Raider game he attended with Chris Lewis the next day.  They had a great time on the 40 yard line in spite of the
outcome of the game.  The person who arranged it for them was the 1983 charter President of the San Ramone Rotary Club, Kurt (last name withheld to protect the innocent.) Forty years later, Kurt is still Al's friend and Kurt got to meet Al's newest Rotary friend, and family member, Chris.

Announcements and Other Fun Stuff
Rotary Charities Golf Open

Christine Jensen says "sign-up, sign-up, sign-up!" She noted that all the major sponsorships have been claimed but hole sponsorships are still open.  Also, they are not above inventing new sponsorships to meet the needs of businesses that would like to be a sponsor.  We also need golfers, register early by August 18th, to save $100.  Register at: www.birdease.com/rotarycharitiesopen or you can go to our club's website and use the link for the tournament.  Raffle and silent auction items are needed. The Rotary Charities Golf Open is being held in five weeks on September 18th.

Tortoise Enclusure Debute

As you all know, the grand opening of the Effie Yeaw Tortoise Enclosure was delayed due to "scheduling issues" and to allow for proper planning for a larger event. It appears that the negotiations with Einstein were successful and the date works for Carmichael Rotary and Effie Yeaw so it looks like a party will be held on the 27th of September.  The time is yet to be determined.  Once it is nailed down, there will be press releases, announcements and a photo shoot to help announce the big day. Cowboy Sparkles and Einstein are both looking forward to the big event.

Rotary Youth Exchange Update

Bruce Stimson shared that there were only a few Rotarians along with the host family and friends at the airport to meet Luana Fernandez attended school yesterday and wants to try out for the volleyball team.  She is doing well and will attend a club meeting once she has settled in.

Secret Word

The Prez asked for the secret word.  Todd was recognized but deferred to Emily Ballus as Emily found the word before Todd did as they both searched the bulletin in advance of the question.  Emily knew that the word was "lettuce."  She graciously agreed to share the prized for knowing the word with Todd... half of nothing is still nothing.
Guest Speaker
Sidney Smith, District Governor 5180
Assistant District governor, John Price introduced the District Governor for District 5180, Sidney Smith.  Sidney has a degree in communication studies from Cal State Northridge.  He spent two decades in the transportation industry in management with the United Parcel Service.  He has been a radio broadcaster, both AM and FM stations and started out as an intern in L.A. for 102.3, KJLH, owned by Stevie Wonder.  He mentors youth, coaches high school football, loves photography, traveling, music and long walks on the beach.  He also is a student of the martial arts form known as Krav Maga; a self-defense system developed by the Israel Defense Forces for training military personnel in hand-to-hand combat.
Sidney enjoys working as a minister in a local church.  His first day as a minister was on September 11, 2001.  He serves on many civic and non-profit boards.  In 2002 Sidney became a Rotarian with the Elk Grove Rotary Club.  Sidney is a pound father and grandfather.  (Let the record show that the club gave Sidney a standing ovation welcome.)

Sidney thanked the club for inviting him to speak and thanked Steve Turner for the friendship they have developed over the past couple of years.  In ministry, the minister has to be careful about the message he shares with his members as he knows them well and they can take things said personally.  Then the evangelist comes in and blows things up and leaves the aftermath for the minister to deal with.  This is his legacy for Steve when he takes office.   Sidney gave credit to his many mentors that helped get him where he is today in Rotary.  It is important to have mentors in Rotary to help you get a clear picture of what Rotary is.  Sidney knows that Rotary is really about friendships.

Sidney asked the club what we are known for, what is our reputation?  When guests visit, do they feel welcome and want to be a part of the club?  Sidney shared that it took him about 15 years to finally realize what Rotary was about.  Before that time, he was just attending meetings.  He then asked how many Rotarians in the room vacation with other members... only a couple of hands went up.  Until recently he would not have raised is hand but now he as a few up-coming vacation dates with fellow Rotarians.

Sidney wants to talk with the club about the "power of the second question."  The first question is "Who are we?"  The second question is "What are we to each other?"  John Price read about Fictive Kinship, it refers to the family members chosen and not decided by blood lines or marriage, God Parents, play uncles and aunties.  Rotarians enjoy Fictive Kinship, if we allow it.

Sidney shared the fact that the first time he encountered Al Frumkin, he formed an opinion of him.  We too often size people up and we determine if they are worthy enough to be invited to play.  We want to invite every age, stage shade and shape of people.  Others also size Rotary up and think they know who we are, elderly, lighter hue, rich and male. He realized that he had sized Al up without every having a conversation with him.  We do this frequently with the people we meet.

Our platform this year is the Say YES campaign.  When you say yes to Rotary, you get to go to places you never would have gone, you get to meet people you never would have met, and you get to do things you never would have done.

We interrupt this train of thought with these commercials:
RYLA.
Do you know a student that needs to attend RYLA?  Would they go if they could afford it but can't, so they don't?  We can help!  Let the District know about the student and there may be a way to help get them there.  Spots are going unfilled at RYLA and this is bad for the perception of the program with the donors as well as for the students.  RYLA, for a better future for students and a better future for Rotary. Paid for by RYLA, making tomorrows leaders, today!

District Conference
District Conference will be held this year at the GSR in Reno.  Rotarians are encouraged to attend to: throw axes, ride go-carts, play Top Golf, ballroom dancing Arthur Murray style, dance with headphones only music (it is a lot of fun and really screws with the minds of the drunks that enter the room by mistake.) There will be a talent show, a speech contest and gambling has been known to take place in Reno... and there is the District Conference.  George Forman will be the guest Keynote speaker... finally your chance to grill him.  It is going to be a family friendly event, bring your kids and grandkids.  Now back to your original message.

Our growth goal for this year is 14%.  That seems arbitrary you say... you are right, it is.  However, it is the amount of growth we need to get our district to 2,000 members, a number we have never reach in the history of the district.  How are we going to get there you ask!?  We simply need to give people a reason to play.  It needs to be a deeper reason, meaningful to the prospective member.  Rotary is about friendships.  Sidney challenged the club to go deeper and develop close friendships, not that we have to vacation together, but form meaningful connections with each other.  We have something that the whole world is looking for, yet we are nonchalant about it.

We have been at 1.2 million members for 20 years.  This is because members are leaving out the back door just as fast as they are coming in the front door.  We need to do better than that.  We need to contact members when they have not been at meetings.  We need to develop the friendships that keep members, members.

Sidney, with the aid of 8th grade Audrey Turner, showed the new Video Newsletter, Go, Meet, Do.  No one was reading the newsletter so they upgraded it to a video newsletter.  Here is the link for the August newsletter:
https://www.rotary5180.org/ Our District wants to share news in a format that people will enjoy.  They are asking us for video stories to share online.  They even have field reporters that are available to attend events and report on them.

14% growth or 4% growth we need to share Rotary with others and shut the backdoor.

Sidney announced that a Paul Harris Award was going to be given today and then called Lisa Keller to the font of the room.  This is Lisa's first Paul Harris award.

Creating Hope Awards

A new award "Creating Hope" was established by the 2023/24 Rotary President, Gordon McInally.  Gordon lost a close brother to suicide and he has a special place in his heart for mental health.  People all around us are experiencing decline in their lives, even in the Rotary world.  When we see someone having a hard time we need to step up and lend support.

This year's Creating Hope Award goes to a member that has been invaluable in connecting our members to all club activities and efforts and has been thorough and committed to sure everything is well documented. This person has been involved in practically every club function that takes place. Sidney then displayed the award winner for our club for the 2023/24-year, Mike Grace.  Mike was surprised and appreciative.
President Goore thanked District Governor, Sidney Smith for his inspiration and the awards presented.  He also thanked Assistant District Governor, John Price and Executive Secretary Maria Mengotti for visiting and making the meeting a special one.
