2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Todd Eichman - Bell Ringer

Todd is ringing the bell in honor of his birthday tomorrow and for having his friend, Daniel Martin back at the meeting.

Matt Ross - Bell Ringer

Matt is ringing the bell because this is the first meeting since the poker tournament and he has has finally sobered up.  He is ringing the bell for the bartenders that were liberally pouring the alcohol.

Tim Cahill - Bell Ringer

Tim was ringing the bell in honor of his and Laurel's 47th wedding anniversary.  He asked permission and for the club's indulgence for just a bit.  Tim then, lovingly gazed into his wife's face and sang, a capella,  "Just The Way You Look Tonight."  Not only did he sing all the right words, but he was on key, and has a very nice voice.  The club was very impressed and gave him a rousing round of applause.   Happy Anniversary!

Greg Cotta - Bell Ringer

Greg's reason for ringing the bell, "I showed up!"

Roy Vogel - Bell Ringer X 2

Roy was happy to ring the bell #1 in honor of his surpassing eight decades and five years of life on March 5th and is sorry to have missed the poker tournament but #2, he and Linda were busy improving the economy of the Virgin Islands at that time.

Bill Hambrick - Envy and Happy Bucks

Bill is envious of Tim's ability and courage for his performance and the fact that Leigh's birthday was 10 days ago and he doesn't have to come up with anything close to that.

President Christine Jensen - Happy Bucks

The Prez is donating a Bell Ringing amount as Happy Bucks, so that the funds go to the club, because she is so happy for the success of the poker tournament.  We had a phenomenal turnout of volunteers, sponsors from our club and players that came out of the woodwork.  We had a full house which beats two pair.  It was amazing.  She thanked everyone from the bottom of her heart.  While it was not a record-breaking year, it came within the expected budget. She could not be more pleased. The Prez noted that the bar tips were about $300, which beat the firefighter's boot as they only had $10 in their boot... and Linda was heard to exclaim "Yea!"  The secret word is "Yea."  Tom Goode is not here today, be sure to thank him for his leadership with the tournament once you see him.
We have New Hats
Linda Bigler - Hocking Hats

Linda announced, we now have very nice, adjustable hats to fit every head, as seen to the right.  "They are adjustable and cool and all that
AED Update

Matt reported that Thursday, April 17th, is the date for the unveiling of the last AED at Howe Park. Put it on your calendar.  It will most likely be a morning event to allow for television coverage.   A signup sheet will be passed around next week.  They only have one more installation to do, Fulton - El Camino RPD  in mid April. This will complete the $11,500 investment in our community.  We will be close to 50 to 60 AEDs when all is said and done.
Richard Goore reminded everyone that they are required to attend at least one of the fireside chats.  You may attend more than one if you like to enjoy the fellowship that is Rotary and the free booze and food that comes with the meeting.  Tony Paulson will be hosting the meeting tonight. Linda Bigler is hosting the meeting on Thursday, April 24, and Rob Olmstead on Wednesday, April 30. They all start at 6:00 PM and all will have alcohol and finger food.
stuff..." and only cost $25.  You need to upgrade your head attire to reflect the new spirit of the club and all the new members that have recently joined.  Gone are the days of the old, tired, plain blue hats.  The time has come to ditch the old hat, and put on the new vibrant and with-it cap, as a symbol of a bright tomorrow and the emergence of the mighty power of our not so little, and growing, club...
Rotary Exchange Student Update

Bruce Stimson shared that both of our outbound students are from El Camino High School.  The young man is going to Brazil and the young lady is going to Switzerland.  We will be hosting two inbound students.  We do not yet know who they are or where they are from.  We need two female and two male counselors to help the inbound  and outbound students with their stays.  You need to meet with the inbound students and connect with the outbound students, at least once a month to see how they are doing.   Linda Bigler was an inbound counselor last time and had a great time. Lisa Frumkin was also a counselor last time.  Linda offered to be a backup counselor this year.
Scholarship Lunch May 20, 2025

John Gabriel shared that the scholarship lunch will be held on May 20th this year.  It is a little later than normal but he is out of town earlier in the month for a 32 day South Pacific cruise.  He won't be back until the 13th of May.  There are 15 students coming to receive their scholarships.  This is a wonderful event and you will not want to miss it. It is at Del Paso Country Club.  We need to cover the costs of the 36 + or - guests we have that day so we need to pass the hat to help pay for their lunches.  We will be doing this over the next few weeks.  Also, the Golf committee is looking for members.  Connect with John or Christine if you are interested in helping.  The new location for the tournament is Whitney Oaks Golf Club.

Lisa Asperger - New Paul Harris Pin

Prez Jensen called Lisa Asperger forward to receive her new Paul Harris pin for achieving the next level in her phenomenal generosity.

Richard Goore - New Paul Harris Fellow

Prez Jensen also called Richard forward to receive his Paul Harris Fellowship certificate and pin.
The Speaker Calendar is full... for the moment
District Governor, Steve Turner, Inducts Dr. Lydia Wytrzes

DG Turner had the privilege of calling Dr. Lydia Wytrzes to the front of the room for her induction ceremony.  Steve began the ceremony with a little quiz for Lydia on a topic she is familiar with, herself.  Steve noted that he has been a private investigator for 30 years and he has uncovered many things.

Steve: Please describe three adjectives that describe yourself?
Dr. Lydia: Friendly, focused, and musical
Steve: Does anyone know the instrument the Dr. plays?
Dr. Lydia: Violin
Steve: Are you reading any books right now?
Dr. Lydia: I'm a massive reader and like murder mysteries, which is of concern to my husband.
Steve: Tell us a little more about your husband.
Dr. Lydia: He is an eye surgeon. They met in Sacramento when she was engaged to someone else.He is a nice guy.  Her parents are from Poland and her mother was a very practical woman who, when looking for a husband for her, told her plenty of times what she needed.  So when she met her husband, despite the fact that she was already engaged, the thoughts that went through her head were, hmm, nice looking, has a good job, not married to anybody else, no kids, and that was 34 years ago.
Steve: You are a doctor and you focus in on sleep studies  Can you give us a funny little story about that?
Dr. Lydia: I'm a neurologist that started studying sleep medicine.  I got so interested in it it became my entire practice.  When I was learning about sleep medicine in the 90's at the University of Washington, there was no such thing as a sleep lab. Patients were seen in the EEG lab.  They were placed on a cot, in the room with the big EEG machine.  The patients would be hooked up to the machine and expected to sleep during the day to be tested for sleep disorders.  Believe it or not, people did sleep.
Steve: Today is April Fools Day.  Do you have any favorite pranks you have played on anyone?
Dr. Lydia: I grew up as the youngest member of the family with two older brothers, so I was always on the wrong end of those and choose not to perpetrate pranks on anyone.
Steve: You once belonged to the Sacramento Downtown Club.  What did you experience there that you would like to bring here?
Dr. Lydia: Hmmm, I hate to say this, but I want to say this... everything about this club is better.  (Probably the best answer to any question that Steve has ever asked.)  She went on to say that smaller, more intimate clubs, help facilitate all the reasons you want to be in Rotary. That is the main problem with the Downtown Club, it is too big.

Steve went on to deliver the "Service Above Self induction talk.  He went on to talk about the coat of self interest and discarding it at the door of the meeting and a few other tried and true truisms. He then officially inducted Dr. Lydia Wytrzes into the club.
DG Steve then proudly presented Lydia with the Governor's pin, only bestowed upon new members by the District Governor.  It is slightly larger than the regular, run-of-the-mill, average member pin and is highly prized by those lucky enough to be inducted by a Governor.  It is magnetic so, if you can't find it, look in the dryer and it may be tightly affixed to the drum wall. He presented her with the folder of Rotary information as well as her Red Badge. Sgt. At Arms Cady was concentrating, and was so proud to have spelled her last name correctly, that he failed to see that he had affixed the name in the badge upside down.  DG Steve then invited all the club members to welcome her by shaking her hand.
Dr. Lydia never intended to be a sleep specialist. Sleep was considered to be a nich field that might be discussed, or addressed, once all of the "Real" problems were considered. Sleep is now seen in a much different light as being very important.

Quality sleep provides all the above.

Goals for today's talk.
Sleep has been discussed for years. Why do we sleep?
During the day we build up a sleep promoting chemical, adenosine, a neuro inhibing chemical.
When we sleep we get rid of adenosine.  The clock in our head, the super-chiasmatic nucleus, is a pacemaker for sleep and wakefulness. It tells us when it is time to sleep and wake up.  When adenosine levels are high and the sleep clock says it it time to sleep, you fall asleep easily.  During sleep the adenosine levels drop off and the body clock flips to the wake mode and you wake up, ready to go.
Not just quantity but quality of sleep that counts. Sleep consists of 90 minute cycles and you need 4 to 5 cycles to get a good night's sleep. If you get good quantity and quality you are fully restored and ready to face the world.
People that get enough quality sleep live longer than those who don't.  Researchers have learned that about 8% of unexpected deaths can be attributed to poor quality sleep.
Lifestyle Medicine has identified 4 pillars to good health: Good nutrition, exercise, social connectivity and sleep.

Sleep deprivation contributes to obesity. Healthy young adults in a sleep deprivation study showed negative effects after just two weeks.
Every stage of memory is linked to sleep.  It helps sort memories and discard information that is not needed, file the information that is needed and retrieve memories when needed. Sleep deprived mice show signs of buildup in the brain associated with dementia. One sleep study showed that individuals with quality sleep had reduced makers for dementia.
Stress, depression, anxiety, mental health problems can all affect the quality of sleep and can all be improved by quality sleep.   Addressing sleep problems can improve one's longevity.

Sleep is a bell shaped curve with 7 to 8 hours at the top.  There are some very efficient sleepers that can get by with less sleep but they are the exception, not the rule. People that get less than 6 hours of sleep a night will start to display the negative signs of sleep deprivation.

Studies do not validate the myth of adaptation to less sleep.  Studies have shown that people are not aware of the drop off of brain activity efficiency and feel there was no difference when there actually is. We do not recognize when we are beginning to make mistakes due to sleep deprivation.  Because we are not aware of the need for sleep, drowsiness is not recognized and it is a major factor in vehicular accidents.
If you are fully rested, you do not fall asleep during "boring" talks.  Your sleep clock is at odds with good deep sleep.
The efficiency of our sleep diminishes with age.

1. You body clock is trainable.  Be consistent with bed time.
2. 65 degrees is the ideal room temperature for sleep.
3. Remove your phone and other electronic devices out of the bedroom.
4. Eating late actually stimulate your body towards activity.  Caffeine is an adenosine blocker and masks tiredness and leads towards sleep deprivation. The effects of the caffein can last over 8 hours. Alcohol is first a stimulant and then a depressant.
5. Exercise can help by raising the body temperature and then dropping it quickly, encouraging the onset of the sleep response.
6. Sleep is enhanced with the aid of pre-sleep routines that put the body into a sleep mode.  White noise can be helpful.
7. When having problems sleeping, often times list making can be helpful. Using a pad and pencil, list all the things that are keeping you awake on one side of the pad and the solutions/actions for them on the other side.  This allows the brain to release concerns over the issues.
8. It does no good to lay in bed if you just can't sleep.  Get up and do something.

There was a question about naps and sleep deficit.  Naps do not help reduce the deficit as it generally is subtracted from the normal night's sleep as far as efficiency and effectiveness goes.  Cultures that take afternoon naps do not sleep more they sleep about the same amount of time, just split up.

Aging brains may become drowsy in the afternoon.  All systems are go for sleep at that time so naps can be beneficial as long as they are not tool long and then interfere with the normal sleep cycle.  Limit the time to 15 to 20 minutes.  As we age we get drowsy earlier and we all turn into early birds.

President Jensen thanked Dr. Wytrzes for the very informative talk and noted that everyone stayed awake during it.

The demotion party is scheduled for Saturday, June 14th.  Put it on your calendar.

President Jensen rang the bell, ending the meeting at about 1:08 PM, extoling all members to share the magic of Rotary.
