Bell Ringers for the 23/24 year at $100, no immunity: Kevin Wilcox, Don Brodeur, Randy Smith, Bob Deering, Jack Kimmel, Tim Hayes, Dave Jones.
Speaker Today: Stephanie Cardenas is the Director of Development with the ALS Association. ALS affects the brain and its connection to muscles in the body. Currently there is no cure, but there are drug treatments that slow progression. The agency serves 600 people in the Sacramento Region. Diagnoses are going up. They are not sure if the increase is due to awareness, or due to a real increase. Genetic research is being conducted; now you can see if you have the familial gene that's an indicator.
Club Assembly:
- Bob Deering gave us the financial year in review, sharing statements for the Club. We had a surplus of $2,833.02 at June 30th. During Covid, we increased our balance in the savings account. The Board is talking about moving some to the Foundation for service projects. Foundation highlights - last year we allocated about $13,000 to service projects. Our endowment pays a percentage of the income for projects, about $7k each year. We also have a fundraiser annually like the Delta Nights fundraiser held recently. The endowment balance is $232,000 in Vanguard accounts overseen by Laura Pajak.
- Randy Smith talked about Rotary International. $50,000 is our club's goal donation this year. We will have a campaign in November. November 18th is the Foundation Dinner at the Citrus Heights Community Center at 6:00 p.m.
- Tim Hayes presented some new ideas about the future of our club. We would like to attract more members. We are considering merging with the Carmichael Club to help them (and us!). We would like to have some younger members that would be active in our service projects. We might like to take a new name that's more reflective of our group. Ideas for names included "The American River Club," "The Capital City Club," or "The Parkway Club." Would we like to keep our lunchtime meetings or move to a dinner hour meeting? If some of our members didn't feel comfortable driving at night, could we pick them up? Feedback was given by many in the room: Dick Hall, Chris Deering, Hanns Haesslein, Randy Smith, Amy Ruggles, Allison Hamaker, Carroll Dudley, and Jim Fritzsche. The feeling was positive that a new name and marketing campaign would be successful.
Raffle: Amy Ruggles won, and gave the wine to Carroll, who gave the wine to our speaker Stephanie.
