4-way Test – Bill Watson talked about his experience at work with a mortgage product called “Stated Income,” and how he saw it was not ethical or fair to families purchasing homes with these mortgages. He told his staff not to do them, and was rewarded with a strong, continuing business when others around him folded during the 2008 housing market collapse. The 4-way test helps us make good choices.

- The CSUS Tailgate Party will be this Saturday, 10/28 in Lot 7 from 2:00-5:30 and Lewie Donhost will bring his RV. Please expect to pay for parking, bring your camp chair and a treat to share.
- Contact Sandi Sava at (916) 947-1958 to purchase poinsettias. This is our 24th year! Delivery is 7:30 am to noon at Bill Watson’s office, The Money Brokers, 2371 El Camino Avenue. If you can come at 7:00 am to help offload, Sandi and Peggy would greatly appreciate the help. $12.50 for large red, white, or crystal pink. $7.50 for smaller red.
- It’s Tim’s birthday tomorrow, and John’s too! We sang happy birthday to them, and Sue Hayes spoiled us rotten with some lovely chocolate cupcakes with coconut pecan icing.
- The Foundation Dinner is November 18th. There are a couple chairs available at our table for $80 apiece, so please send Bob a check if you would like to join us.
- Joe Scheimer said the deadline to donate to Polio Plus was extended to the end of the month. Please use the link on the District website. We need to earn $50m internationally to get the funding match from the Gates Foundation.
Happy Dollars: 1) Hanns told us about his trip to Argentina and Chile and had photos for us. He became a bellringer. 2) Randy is happy with the 10-day cruise he took from Vancouver to Hawaii. He climbed Diamond Head and spent 3 days at the Aulani Disney Resort in Honolulu. 3) Lewie is happy to see Father Calderon today.

Speaker Today: Father Calderon spoke about the history behind Cristo Rey school. Their motto is to Encounter God In All Things. First, he talked about growing up in South Central LA to a single mother and immigrant grandparents. His family taught him to be a humble servant. He learned that working hard for those you care for is a worthwhile sacrifice.
Education by the Jesuits includes a relationship focus – how to interact with others positively. The school focuses on the community. In 1966, Cristo Rey started in Chicago. The community told the Jesuits they needed a good school but could not afford private tuition. The model for a Cristo Rey school was invented then; it’s one of 41 schools using this method. In Sacramento, Bishop Weigand knew the poor in this community needed access to a good education. For direction, he leaned on the Sisters of Mercy who have been managing hospitals and schools in the valley for over 100 years. The cost of a year at Cristo Rey now is $12,000 per student, and only $600-800 is paid by the student’s family. Most families at the school are immigrants, and most of the parents are not high school graduates. Many parents work multiple jobs with an average income of $38,000 per year. If they make above the poverty line, which today is $44,000 for a family of four, they are not accepted. The school offers a work study program, and they partner with hospitals, banks, legal firms, and engineering firms. Students in the program are a good influence on siblings and friends, helping many to work toward success. This year there are 325 students at Cristo Rey. We listened to Father Foley speak in Chicago saying, “What do you hope for? Our mission is to make the kingdom of God concrete in the here and now. Keep on Dreaming.” Students work one day a week. Freshmen work Mondays, Seniors Tuesdays, Sophomores Wednesdays, and Juniors Thursdays. The other days they are in class.
