Meeting called to order. Pledge led by Maria Mengotti, followed by the 4-way test. Jim had our thought for the day: "No great thing was created suddenly." Then he reminded us of his favorite movie "Shawshank Redemption" and encouraged us to take one little piece out of the wall each day.
Guests: We enjoyed the company of Joe Scheimer, our District Rotary Foundation Chair, and Bob Tilly, past president of Point West Rotary Club. Also, Sophia came with Maria, looking so grown up now.
Tax & Accounting Minute: Waxing historic, Jim talked about the Apollo 13 crew. Astronaut Jack Swigert joined that crew at the last minute. When he was up in orbit he remembered that he'd forgotten to file his taxes. The president granted him an extension.
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Last week Jim forgot the raffle prize, so he fined himself. Two raffle prizes were displayed on the table today for the choosing.
Sunshine Report: Lewie brought a delicious cake for dessert, and read off the names of our birthday boys & girls for July and August: 7/1 Maria Mengotti, 7/4 Karl Dinse, 7/16 Daniela Calvitti, 7/18 Don Cotton, 7/22 Jack Kimmel, 8/1 Kevin Wilcox, 8/2 Bob Deering, 8/9 Robert Lehe, 8/31 Jerry Wright. Wedding anniversaries are: 7/1 Peggy and Dan Honeyman, 7/11 Lewie and Becky Donhost, 7/19 Tim and Sue Hayes, 7/28 Charley and Lisa Rea, 8/13 Bill and Linda Mason.
Rotary News:
- Rotary House this Saturday 9 AM. Bring trimmers and blowers and gloves, but no rakes since they damage the irrigation drip system. Please come to 4070 2nd Ave to do weeding and trimming; Jim promises doughnuts.
- The Board approved the club budget and the club's foundation/service budget.
- Joe Scheimer congratulated us on receiving $6k to use on global grants.
- Sunday July 30th we will go to the State Fair and watch the horse races. $16 admission general, $12 senior. Please let Amy know if you can come. She will collect bets and any money won will go into the club account. Meet at the entrance to the track at 3:00 pm. After a few races, we will move into the fairgrounds to sample the fair fare. Friends and family are welcome. Jim had us recite the traditional and ancient Fritzsche Family Horse Cheer.
- Children from the Receiving Home will join us for lunch at our next meeting. We purchased 16 passes for them to spend a day at 6 Flags Discovery Park in Vallejo this September.
Speaker: Jim introduced Kyle P. Waters, PhD, a CSUS Professor of Physics and Astronomy, fibbing that the Webb Space Telescope had been turned to face earth and had found the lost Ark of the Covenant, the Lost City of Atlantis (which was Atlanta after all). It found Waldo hiding in Rio Linda, the Bermuda Triangle at the bottom of the sea (which turned out to be a pool rack). It found some fun on a tropical island somewhere, and also finally found Henry the Peacock, Randy Smith's long lost presidential mascot.
Kyle Waters PhD started off with a timeline showing the creation of the James Webb telescope and its launch. He explained its million mile position in space, and contrasted its abilities with the Hubble. Countering Jim's discussion of great finds on earth, Dr. Waters said the Webb Space Telescope only faces away from our sun and earth, and it must be kept very cold to work properly. On July 12th 2022 the Webb telescope released its 1st set of 5 images. He discussed each magnificent photo, explaining the constitution of each nebula or galaxy, the meanings of their colors, the action happening, and the science involved in measuring heat and atmosphere types. Many club members had questions. Dr. Waters's knowledge and energy made for a fascinating presentation.
Raffle: Amy Ruggles won and chose the wine, which she gifted to our speaker in Carroll Dudley fashion.
