Thanksgiving Meeting
We celebrated Thanksgiving as only President Amy could.  It was a lot of fun.  We started by teaming up with another member and doing a word scramble game.   4 teams were able to correctly answer all the word scrambles.  However, there was some questionable sharing of answers between the 4 teams.   Maria Mengotti and ADG Steve Turner were the winning team and each got a Rotary Monopoly game, a bottle of wine and a turkey rear end hat.

After calling the meeting to order, we introduced our guest.  Steve Turner asked that the club presidents in his area of control visit each of the other clubs. We had Richard Olebe from Carmichael and John Price from Point West join us.

Bowling – This Saturday, November 19th, we will be hosting a bowling social get together at Country Club Lanes.  It starts at 1:30.

Rotary House Clean Up – Thank you to President Amy, Peggy Porter Honneyman, Allison and John Hamaker, Lewie Donhost and Tim Hayes for doing cleanup at the Oak Park Rotary House last Saturday.  Tim also announced that 3 Spring Snow Crab apple trees have been ordered from the Sacramento Tree Foundation and we will help plant them when they arrive.

Children’s Receiving Home –We will celebrate Christmas with the kids on Dec 2 at 5pm.  It will be at La Rosa Blanca Restaurant. ESR will be giving each child a high-quality backpack, among other things.

Clothing and Diaper Drive – Dave Jones asked us to start bringing in diapers and baby food for the Undie 500.   This is for the children of students at American River College.  We are also doing a clothing drive for the Women’s Empowerment program.  We are awaiting details from Women’s Empowerment as to what clothes are needed and when.

YWCA – George Gomes passed around a signup sheet for the YWCA dinner on December 5 at 5:15pm. George needs volunteers to provide food, drinks and utensils.

Travels with Amethyst -  Hanns Haesslein told us about Travels with Amethyst.  Apparently, they didn’t go anywhere except to Hanns home.  However, it was for a good cause.  Dr. Hanns delivered 4 baby armadillos, which he brought to the meeting.  Hanns also shared information about armadillos.

Christmas Party – Bill Watson reminded us of the Christmas Party at his house on December 10 from 5-10pm.  Bill says there will be special wine and entertainment.  Let’s hope the entertainment isn’t Lewie Donhost in his hula skirt and coconuts.

Speaker – Some of the best programs the club has ever had have been from our own members.  This one was special.  Bob Deering told us why Chris and he are such big contributors to the Rotary Foundation.  Initially, Bob gave because the club foundation chair said he had to give at least $100 every year.   After Bob married Chris, she got him to reconsider how much he was involved in Rotary.  He went on a Group Study Exchange to Sweden where he brought 4 other non-Rotarian business people with him.   This was his first-hand experience as to what the Foundation did in the world.

A few years later Chris and he went to Peru where the Foundation paid for 500 wheelchairs for children. One child thanked him since now he would be able to go outside and see the stars without someone having to carry him outside.  Bob realized that if the project changed the life of just one child, then it was a success.

He later brought to the district the largest grant every given by the Rotary Foundation to a US district.  This grant funded the Human Trafficking program in the greater Sacramento area.

If you have not done so, please consider giving to the Rotary Foundation this month.   Bill Watson, Amy Ruggles, Carol Dudley, Laura Pajek and Keith McBride each pledged $1000 to match any money given by a club member.  This way if you give $100 to the Foundation you will get credit for $200.
