Thought - Friday is Flag Day. At the National Museum of American History, our president Jim Frizsche saw the original US flag from 1812 that inspired the Star-Spangled Banner. He showed us a photo.
Presentation - Sandy Dudley and Carol Wacker from the Assistance League of Sacramento thanked us for helping at their springtime gala.
Awards - Jim recognized Bob Deering and Randy Smith for their excellent IT support, giving them Swiss Army backpacks. Keith McBride for his legal guidance especially in the work of this merger. Marsha Vacca for her help in our Public Image that won us an award at the District Conference. Amy Ruggles for helping us have fun this year. Allison Hamaker for her bulletins. Bob Deering for serving as our treasurer. Randy Smith for being Mr. Foundation. Charley Rey for his work with the youth in RYLA and the Speech Contest. He also had awards for Sandi Sava, Tim Hayes, and Dick Hall but will award them in person later.
Happy Dollars - Amy Ruggles gets two have some real days off work. Jim Shaw has a granddaughter graduating from UC Santa Cruz with a degree in Environmental Studies. Jim Fritzsche was happy that there were 4 Fritzsche guests in attendance. Bill Baxter was happy that he joined Rotary when he was 27, and has been a member of Carmichael Rotary for 57 years. He donated $10 per year and rounded it up to $600, ringing the bell six times!!!

Speaker - Bill Fritzsche shared his experience in running marathons. First a little history: in 490 BC, when the Athenians were battling the Persians at Marathon, Pheidippedes was asked to run 26.2 miles to deliver a message to the general. He delivered his message and dropped dead. In 1896 when the modern Olympics began in Athens, a marathon run was included. The next year, the Boston Marathon had its first event. Marathons weren't common - these two were the main events. In the 1940s in Culver City California, a marathon had its first year. Marathons became more popular after Frank Shorter won the marathon in the 1972 Munich Olympics, and again in 1976 in Montreal. On race day in Boston, there are 30,000 people at the starting line. It's Patriot's Day in Massachusetts, a state holiday. Runners are bussed to the starting line at Hopkington High School. To run, you must be prequalified by gender and age and are seeded for a selected start time, either 10:00, 10:20, or 10:40. The halfway point is Wellesley Women's College, and the students are LOUD. Mile 16-21 is hilly. The 4th hill is nicknamed "heartbreak hill." It seems like the last 6 miles is really the second half of the race. When you see the CITGO sign, you have one mile to go. Fenway Park is on the right. Often the baseball game is just letting out when the runners go by. There's a parade-like feeling. Bill has run over 75 marathons. Bill met his wife Jennifer in 2004 at the Boston Marathon. They married 1.5 years later. Jennifer was at the Boston Marathon in 2013, the year of the bombing. The place was evacuated. One of her friends was caught between the two bombs. Cell service was turned off for a time, and that made getting news of friends and family difficult. Jennifer still enjoys running even after that traumatic event. She was 18th in Chicago last October and is going to run in Sydney this September. We wish her well.
