Tax and Accounting Minute by Jim: Ed Slott CPA, an IRA expert, suggests we convert our IRA to Roth now, pay the taxes on the movement now, and then let the balance grow untaxed as a Roth. You can leave it in as long as you like, growing tax free, then take out money for 10 years. At the 10-year mark, put the money into investments so it continues to grow.
News: George reminded us about the YWCA Christmas meal 12/11 Monday. Bring the food by 5:15 and we’ll serve at 6:00 PM. Chris said we did a great job on the poinsettia sales, selling 750 plants. Peggy sold 236! Bill Watson reminded us about the Christmas party at his house 12/16. It’s not a potluck, just come about 5:00 and enjoy yourself. He also mentioned our date with the Salvation Army kettle 12/23 at the Bel Air on Arden at Eastern. Our goal is to raise $10,000 this year.

Speaker Today: Ret. Judge Dave Abbott spoke on the topic of Judicial Independence. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He made a quick review of our governmental system, a Republic with three branches of government, separation of powers, checks & balances, and the important fact that judges are not supposed to legislate from the bench. Judges are supposed to make decisions without regard to partisan interests, public influence, or pressure. Judge Abbott touched on ethics, how judges get their appointments, that they serve in 6-year terms, that they can be recalled by the public, and disciplined or removed by the Commission on Judicial Performance. He also mentioned the controversy of the existence of Administrative Law Judges which operate wholly within the Executive branch of government. The Supreme Court will soon consider their legality.
